Okay friends, let’s check who has a Samsung OLED panel, and who has the BOE OLED panel inside his Deck.

Steps to check:

  1. Go to Desktop mode

  2. Open Konsole

  3. Paste the following command into the terminal:

cat /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid | hexdump -C

You will get the output like in this screenshot:

The marked number is relevant and means the following:

01: 800x1280 @59.998545 (BOE, LCD)

02: No longer present

03: 800x1280 @90.003892 (Samsung, OLED)

04: 800x1280 @90.061454 (BOE, OLED)

So my results are:

Model: Steam Deck 512GB OLED

Panel: Samsung OLED

What’s yours? Please also don’t forget to post the model, so we can analyze if there’s some correlation.

Blah, should I just wait until I can buy a replacement panel? I don’t want the stress of RMAing it and potentially getting another shitty BOE panel.

IMO pull the trigger. If you’re comfortable replacing the panel yourself, then the two week period doesn’t matter. The OLED deck despite its issues (and I’m one of the multiple dead pixel folks), feels great to use. The screen is a gamechanger, but even more so for me the trackpad responsiveness combined with that 90hz makes the device feel more fluid and capable as I’m going between games. I actually use desktop mode, so this matters a lot to me.

You want to purchase a replacement panel with your own money and replace it yourself? I like fiddling around, but that just sounds unsatisfying, because it’s a brand new device. Also, let’s hope the replacement panels will be the ones from Samsung and not from BOE.

It’s not great but I have a single dead green one and a lot of people have it much worse. Do I really want to risk getting a worse steamdeck?
