Can someone please ELI5 to me why people here hate teslas so much? They have some of the best manufacturing, battery and self driving technology in the world. Is it because of Elon? I don’t get it.

Are you seriously saying they have some of the best manufacturing? My sweet summer child, even the Tesla fans that focus on the benefits of Tesla acknowledge that Tesla lays it’s focus clearly on the power grid & battery and that the manufacturing is really low-quality.

Their self driving is not the best in the world, they’re not really rated all that well in self driving, they just market it that way.

      https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/25/business/consumer-reports-ford-bluecruise-tesla/index.html

Their infotainment system isn’t great, their dashboard for the model 3 is in the middle of the car, and there’s no speedometer where every other manufacturer puts it. The infotainment system also controls the wipers, climate, and everything else with a touch screen, making it less useful and more dangerous for an average driver.

Their manufacturing isn’t outstanding, they had a target goal of full automatic factories, but instead have to rely on underpaid, nonunion workers, and it shows in the build quality.

They don’t supply parts, info, and equipment to 3rd party manufacturers, making it more expensive to maintain and fix their cars.

Their batteries are average, but they intentionally lie on the range estimate to make them look better.

      https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/tesla-batteries-range/

Basically, aside from the advantage of being the first major EV manufacturer, everything else commonly associated with Tesla is just marketing lies.

That’s one thing the workers should definitely fix.

I work on Teslas for a living, and even if Elon was a good guy I would never buy one. They’re garbage cars with good software.

My friend has a Tesla and thinks otherwise about the software, he thinks Tesla users are helping beta test the software/car, and one of his complaints is that the new vision based auto wiper is crap, they should have stuck with a rain sensor which have been working fine for the last ~10 years.

The rating system that Tesla’s mechanics in Sweden are judged by seems to incentivize poor service. Troubleshooting is discouraged and pushing the car out the door in shortest time possible encouraged.^1

It’s pretty much the opposite of what we did in a similar field of work. Getting things right on the production line, even at the cost at stopping it, usually saves money long term. I’d wager it’s similar with car service, repeat visits eats unnecessary resources and makes customers dissatisfied.

There’s a decent chance unionisation at Tesla Sweden would improve Tesla by improving the rating system used for wage negotiations.

I’ve seen lots of comments (on Reddit) about lousy quality control on Teslas. The company also made false claims about range.

Big companies all act like psychopaths, so I don’t know if it’s worse than other car companies, but Tesla seems to have more than it’s fair share of faux pas.

EVs are the equivalent of e-cigs.
Maybe less bad than the original, but they bring their own issues while marketed like the solution for the problem.

My pet theory (subjective experience having smoked both) is we’re gonna find out later that they were worse for you in a way we didn’t anticipate. This is coming from a guy who prefers the whole vape experience (ive smoked ~30 years) but it hurts my lungs in a way smoke doesn’t, and i cough up way more phlegm. Vape fucks my lungs.

Anyway I’ve quit again (2 months!)

Shit, i was gonna continue your vape analogy and just ended up ranting, sorry

Have you driven one? They’re the most cheaply built EVs on the market. My 2007 Honda had straighter panel gaps.

After many many fuck ups, the most recent is that Tesla is trying to skirt labor rights in Sweden of all places, where labor is highly organized. The strikes have been hilarious to me, but labor is entitled to the value of all that it makes. Elon sucks, but this company would suck with or without him.
