Reposting this from another car repair sub bc I just need some help.

Mazda cx5, 2018.

I got into my car on Wednesday and noticed a faint smell of gas. I thought it’d clear up, but about 5 mins into my drive, I realized the gas smell was BAD and getting worse. I u-turned back home, all within maybe 10 min, and upon arriving in my driveway there was some oil/fuel (?) leaking behind the car AND it looked like there was a tiny bit of white smoke coming from under the hood (please note: I’m not entirely sure of this because I was freaked out and panicking. My roommate says no white smoke, I said yes, small puffs of white smoke).

There was no problem with the car when I used it the day before and there was no significant change in fuel level.

Obviously, I need a professional to see the vehicle to assess the problem, but honestly, I’m scared to start the car and cause a fire. I’m dumb about this - is that a risk?

Can I start the car to further take a look or is this an issue that calls for a tow truck?

I will take any advice or potential diagnoses on the problem as I’m clearly clueless.

Thank you.

I came here from your prior post to answer your question. Do not start the engine. The line is leaking directly onto the engine, which gets hot. If that fuel lands on the exhaust piping, it might ignite. Chances are high that it will ignite. You don’t want that.
