I was convinced for me it would be the 90hz refresh rate, or the improved touchscreen/haptics - but the moment I picked up the new OLED I knew my answer straight away:
The 30g they removed from the weight.
I’m sure that sounded minimal and inconsequential for a lot of us when we heard about it, but when you pick it up, you feel it immediately.
The original steam deck was always a bit too heavy for me to hold comfortably. Especially as I struggle with a disability which makes me pretty weak in general.
Now the device is so much more comfortable to hold. I can actually pick it up and hold it with one hand now, whereas before it would always overbalance and I could never keep it straight.
What’s the best upgrade from your experience so far, if any of you are lucky enough to have an OLED now?
I don’t know, it wasn’t delivered yet.
The lighter weight is my 2nd favorite change as well I think. Tho mine came in yesterday so I’m excited to spend more time with it and get to know all the little improvements!
- Better cooling
- Less weight
- 90hz screen
- Bigger screen
- Faster ram
Can’t say about the battery cause I use it at home 99% of the times
90Hz is definitely the biggest one for me since I stream a lot of games from my PC, but aside from the screen I would have to say the battery!
Does that not introduce significant input lag when playing action games? I haven’t tried streaming anything from my PC yet.
With my PC always connected to our router via ethernet I’ve measured about a frame of lag at 60 FPS. Streaming at 90 FPS will definitely help mitigate that but there will always be some.
I’m really sensitive to input lag and I find it more than playable for anything I’ve thrown at it so far. I probably wouldn’t play CS or Halo on it though.
I’ve played Nier Automata, Spider Man, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for hours streamed to my deck and not once did I ever feel frustrated by it. It’s astonishing really.
I’ve even read that an even snappier experience can be had with Moonlight, a third-party streaming app so I’ll have to give that a try.
The Wifi 6E for me. I had upgraded my internet to 6E and old deck did not like staying connected even on a lower band. New one is solid and I can stream PS5 again with no noticeable latency or input lag
Nobody mentioning the faster charging? Seriously impressed by how quickly it zips to fill with a bigger battery
Is the charger faster? It still says 45W. I know the cord got longer
Yep!
“Faster 0.8C charging rate, ‘20%–80% in as little as 45 minutes’”
They seem to have rebalanced it massively too, so that 30g of weight makes a bigger difference than you’d think. The majority of the weight seems to be wear your hands naturally hold it, making it really comfortable.
I’m with you on the weight
I don’t have an OLED but I think aside from the screen the biggest one for me would be battery
Looking forward to the 30g less will be awesome, especially since I have the Jsaux modcase on my LCD, but I’m not putting a case on my OLED LE as I don’t want to cover that beautiful LE color.
The touch screen feels so much more responsive than my lcd. Huge upgrade for me.
Haven’t tried the oled but the LCD deck’s touchscreen is so bad. I wanted to use it as a sort-of tablet, but typing on that screen was so innacurate that it was an awful experience.
Right? I would try and type on it for little things in konsole etc and I’d always have missing letters bc it just never got all of the taps. So lame.
Yeah. It was fine for games that needed it for some inputs, but hearing that the OLED has a much better one is great, now I can use it to browse the internet
Probably the screen
Not having used it yet, the benefits I’m looking forward to most are the improved battery and then the display, of course!
The battery and efficiency improvements.
No one here seems to mention the 400 nits peak brightness vs 600/1000 & HDR. As a LCD owner that seems a big upgrade to me ?! Isn’t it that noticeable ?
The sticks feeling way better. I can really feel extra height.
Pulling up Horizon Zero Dawn and the temps going from 80’s to high 60’s was really awesome, too.
