Hi All,
Im looking to reoutfit my aging server with some new, higher capacity drives. Current ones are 4TB WD Reds with around 69k hours! I’ve seen some good deals from both companies, especially GHD but was wondering what ppls experiences were like going across the boarder in regards to duty/tax and warranties.
Any fellow Canadians able to chime in?
Thank you
I ordered a pair through their Ebay store front a few months ago. Shipping through Ebay was cheaper than their main site. I vaguely recall that 3 or 4 was the break point for it to be cheaper to order through the main site. But, YMMV. About 30 USD for the pair.
It took a couple of weeks and the last 1.6 kilometers was through CanPost. They did want duties/taxes on it. But, if you pay through the CanPost website about a day or so before, you can just pick it up off “the door step” vs paying the fellow at the “door”. I’d have to go digging but D&T was about 50 CAD for the pair.
No issues so far, RNG willing.
My only gripe, for small values of gripe, is that if you can offer free ground to Alaska, you should offer free ground to Canada, excluding D&T, after a reasonable dollar amount is reached. I’d be willing to get up to that dollar amount. Oh, I don’t doubt that there are perfectly valid and acceptable business reasons for not offering. But, it would be nice.
Was this with server parts deals? It looks like GHD only does FedEx or ups which sucks for cross boarder with the brokerage fees
Yes, SPD. https://www.ebay.ca/str/serverpartdeals. I think it was UPS to Ebay international (Asendia in this case) and then to CanPost.
I haven’t run with GHD, though their Ebay.ca storefront looks like it has a similar setup for shipping.
Ok good to know. I’d prefer SPD since they seem to have a better reputation but the extra warranty combined with the cheaper price right now make GHD har dto pass up.
Do you know how SPD handles warranties from Canada?
