I don’t mountain bike a ton anymore, but I used to a ton as a kid. I can tell you my dad would have grounded me for a month if I just tried to throw my bike halfway over the tailgate because it would scratch the shit out of the truck without one of these, and I don’t see why this would be necessary when you can just throw the bike in the bed.
I’ve put bikes in a truck tons of times, and I’ve literally never done that.

ever see a pad on the tailgate of a truck? that’s literally what it’s for. thule/dakine/similar all make the same thing for exactly this purpose
