Feel like ever since Ronaldo moved to Saudi and with the hype around Messi, we have forgotten about Ronaldo (though I’m not surprised). He has been doing real good with Al Nassr this season and is in great form, but because he no longer plays in Europe, will he even have a good Euro Tournament next year? The competition in Saudi Arabia is no where near what is in Europe, but then again its Ronaldo.

I’d say he probably scores three goals and Portugal go out in the quarter finals, semi at best but it will be down to the rest of the team if they do that.

No matter the league, the numbers he has been putting up is impressive for any 39 year old, I think he could have a good tournament, but his role might have to be as a super sub, especially in the latter stages of the competition, but I think he could still shine

I would understand him being a sub if Portugal had someone better but they don’t, ramos has been decent but I still think ronaldo is still better so why would he be on the bench?

I was really only saying that to not get downvoted to oblivion for being a Ronaldo rider, but I agree with you

On paper they have as good a team as any. Quality all the way thru the team. They just need martinez to make them a winning team. It’s possible for sure. One possible downside for Martinez was that she wasn’t able to keep the egos in check for Belgium in the last WC, there’s potential for that here too. Let’s see

Did you watch their recent qualifier matches? He was mad when Bruno scored instead of crossing to him. He’s finished and a detriment to the team

Sure, I think he could do quite well. It is Ronaldo we’re talking about, after all. The man with the most will and the most conviction in himself. However, his form as of late isn’t really as impressive as you make it out to be. While it is true that he has been industrious in front of goal, if you take a look at the teams he’s scored against this year, I’d be seriously impressed if you can name even three players from ONE of them. It’s easy for a player of Ronaldo’s ability to shine in a league that shitty. Also consider that Al-Nassr have a seriously stacked team with players that are constantly looking to serve Ronaldo chances. I’ve seen some of the team’s highlights this season just to gauge the level the Saudi league’s at, and I can tell you that it’s shockingly bad. It’s like sunday league stuff. As for his international goals, just take a quick gander at Portugal’s Euros qualifiying group and you’ll see the pedigree of teams he’s scored against. It’s almost a farce just how easy Portugal’s group was.

I’m not holding anything against Ronaldo. In fact, I think it is remarkable that he’s still so active and still making a mark on football at his age. I just don’t think we should get carried away with our assessment of the fella. He’s turning 39 soon, and we could clearly see already a year ago with United that he looked off it and not up to par in a highly competitive league. His Saudi move was largely made to stroke his gargantuan ego, and when he gets the chance to shine against nobodies in the desert, his ego gets plenty a’ strokin’.

I bloody hope so. I can’t take seeing Portugal underperforming, but Martinez has already fumbled another golden generation.

Honestly, leave him alone with all the speculation.

Ronaldo’s done enough for the beautiful game and we should let him enjoy his last few years—he’s clearly having a lot of fun playing with the Al Nassr squad.

Martinez has made the most of a situation where a 39 year old is completely undroppable, and tbf Ronaldo really has been pretty good in the qualifiers. I doubt it will be enough to go toe to toe with teams like France at the sharp end of the competition, though, but Ronaldo won’t go down without a fight.

Hard to say really. The standard of the Saudi league is very low and the amount invested into Al Nassr apart from Ronaldo has really given him a team where he put up the numbers he is putting on. Not many people want to hear this but his performance in Saudi is no where near a good metric to judge how he will do with Portugal at the Euros.

There is other factors at play here and we can’t down play them. Heading into last WC, Portugal had one of the most talented teams, perhaps only Brazil and France ahead of them. They were far more talented than Argentina per position, yet didn’t have anywhere the cohesion nor the mental fortitude to over come adversity the same way Argentina did.

So, here we are having another conversation about how well they will do, not knowing for sure how they will perform at the Euros. Personally, Portugal won’t win because I think there is significant gap between France England compared to the rest of the competition.
