I too imagined that EVs would herald a glorious new ere of automotive design, freed from the constraints of ICE! but ah no

yeah but the old designs used to look cool, now they look bad

it feels like for some designs they took a computer and said “design for aero - GO!” and just clicked “accept” on the first thing the computer came up with, aesthetics be damned

It’s a shame the most popular vehicles in the US (trucks, SUVs) are the least aerodynamic and deadliest to pedestrians and other road users.

I mean a lot of people here, including some on this sub, constantly shit on actually aerodynamic designs like the EQS or the Model 3, calling them egg shaped and stuff. Building giant bricks seems to in line with American taste.

I’d say the EQS manages to be both aerodynamic and attractive. The Taycan and Air have also pulled it off. Tesla has struggled to balance those two.

Egg shaped is a first for me. The model 3 and Y have a distinct fish and frog like appearance, but the model S proves that doesn’t have to be the case.

Still, I’d rather have a weird fish-frog hybrid than an SUV on the roads.

The front ends have that fish/frog appearance, but the egg shaped is more like the whole thing (for the X and Y at least). Look at them from a 45 angle. Not a lot of sharp distinctive lines cause it’s trying to be as aerodynamic as an SUV can be.

One of the most beautiful cars ever made had amazingly fantastic aerodynamics. (IMHO)

The third generation RX7 by Mazda has stellar aerodynamics and in the aerodynamics automotive textbooks is held out as an example of how to do it right.

That’s my biggest issue. It’s why my next car is a PHEV. It’s enough for 95% of my driving.

And not for the better, aesthetically. The Air is a beautiful car, but most of the cars on these most aerodynamic lists are quite ugly.

Such is media these days, centered around 1 argument without any context or counterpoint. And if you are not knowledgeable about the topic then you really wouldn’t know.
