Hello! We found a Facebook Marketplace listing for a used 2012 Toyota Corolla S with odometer reading of 89,300 miles for $7900. We checked out the car in person about a week ago and everything seemed to check out as the car was running well and the interior and exterior was in good condition. I did a quick VIN check using this faxvin.com which also checked out but did not get a full vehicle history report at the time. Ultimately, we purchased the car for $7000, got it smogged, and transferred the title without issue. Fast forward to now, I randomly decided to check the VIN on epicvin.com and saw that the last reported mileage was 243,219 miles which concerned me so I purchased a CarFax report that also showed the last reported mileage was 243,219 miles. Given the car’s odometer is showing 89,446, it seems very likely the odometer is rolled back. If that is the case, what should my next steps be? (I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit to be posting this to but any help would be appreciated)
This should probably be in r/legaladvice, but you bought the car from a private party with no warranty expressed or implied, so my feeling is this would be headed to small claims court. Mechanically speaking, the gauge cluster was replaced with one from a lower mileage Corolla. You can’t roll back a digital odometer, as far as I know.
