Since the screen will be getting a massive quality improvement will you be getting the 512gb glossy or 1tb Anti-glare etched glass? I previously went with the etched glass LCD and I’m now thinking of upgrading to the glossy oled for full screen clarity.
Also since the nits are higher with the oled model (1000 hdr), glare should be less of an issue when I do use it outside my home.
Many of you have never owned an OLED and it shows… I actually feel bad for some of you, its kind of sad how uneducated some of you are on these panels…but hey, do what makes you happy…
I would never replace the storage myself on a device. That’s why i want the larger storage out of the box. I use my etched steamdeck original daily. It absolutely is not blurry lol. The screen looks great, and its just LCD. It will be even better with oled. How much this is being blown out of proportion is crazy. You get a lot of benefits with etched - more storage, anti glare, freedom to play anywhere, more durable screen, most premium model. with the one tradeoff of BARELY noticeable color downgrade. You would think from all these comments that the etched glass makes games unplayable. I played my deck yesterday. First in the living room with all the lights on. My son was playing his oled switch. My screen was perfect, his was filled with glare. then i played later in the dark, and my screen looked excellent. Once you get the device, you are never going to notice or care about a tiny downgrade in screen brightness or blacks. But you will notice the glare, the ability to play anywhere anytime, and the fact that the etched is so durable the screen will not scratch. If someone wants to buy the cheaper model because of the savings, then that makes sense. But trying to twist this argument into saying that glossy version is a better device is simply untrue. When I’m traveling or going anywhere, i don’t have to give it a second thought about my lighting environments. It’s a portable device, that’s why Valve chose to put etched on their top model. Anyone with the glossy has to plan and think about how to make it work when they play in different light environments. In the end, the obsession over making the screen look 5% better, is going to be such a moot point compared to all the benefits of etched.
For anyone that owns an OLED TV (always glossy) and an OLED monitor (often matte/anti-reflective), this choice in configurations from Valve was a very, very strange one. With OLED being the primary, visual upgrade for the new Steam Deck OLED, you want to retain as much true black and color vibrancy as possible, and in no uncertain terms, any anti-reflective/matte coating will cause an appreciable hit to both.
If you live with OLED on a day-to-day basis, you know that sacrificing color saturation and the absolute contrast ratio is a price not worth paying.
I have a switch oled, my pixel is oled, my sony tv is oled; none are etched and I’ve never had an issue with glare. I just want that transparent shell; might try and mod the glossy oled black shell, is that hard to replace shells?
Preach!
Will get highest end model with etched glass for the 1tb and throw a screen protector on it like Dave2D showed
Guessing you missed Russ’ video the other day(Retro Gaming Corps)
He had earlier stated the same, that a screen protector helped. But after a week, he took it off because it was more vibrant but still hazy.
He advised against doing that and getting the 512gb. As an owner of 7 OLED panels of various types, Im cancelling my Limited Edition that wasnt even that limited for a 512gb. Its a shame because the LE looked great…
I tried to cancel mine but they said I have to refuse the package (even though it hasn’t even shipped yet). Since they are just going to drop it off at my doorstep while I’m at work idk how I can refuse it lol
