After the Premier League handed out a ten-point deduction to Everton, Martyn Ziegler explains what could happen next for other clubs if they are found guilty of breaking rules
I don’t know what will happen with City. My guess is very little.
Chelsea are self reporting financial irregularities and violations identified through the due diligence process and subsequent takeover process. Hitting current ownership with a massive points deduction seems counter intuitive and unlikely. I would expect a massive fine, instead, and possible transfer window bans.
So they’re just allowed to get away with it because it happened under a previous ownership? If I went to the police and admitted to committing a murder would I get away with it just because I said that it happened 2 years ago and I had a different girlfriend at the time?
How about this analogy: if the previous owners of a block of land buried toxic waste there, and after purchasing the land I discovered it and reported it, would I be let off the hook? Nope, I would be legally responsible for the clean up and the ongoing impacts. I could sue the previous owners but if they’ve hightailed it to a favourable jurisdiction then I’m left with the mess.
Nah the most recent leaks are far more damning and weren’t self reported. The fact that your ownership have already admitted financial irregularities might not help your case ultimately
I say toss a 20 point deduction at Chelsea and a 100 point deduction at City. And if City don’t make 100 this season, they get the rest next season in the Championship.
Or that would set a precedent that all you need to do to avoid the punishments is change ownership. Both clubs need to be punished, otherwise corruption has won
Agree, Clearlake withheld £100 million of the fee during the Chelsea purchase to cover any potential fines they might face after investigation, makes far more sense for the FA to take a chunk of that then to dock points.
I suspect city’s policy of throwing a Fuck load of very expensive lawyers and money at the case and refusing to admit any wrongdoing will work out better than them, than Chelsea being compliant

The club is a separate entity entirely from its owners.

Your analogy is not good.

Actually yes. It depends how you buy the land and the legal documents. That’s what reps and warranties and indemnifications are for in the documents.

Chelsea didn’t self report it though - that was bullshite news.

That’s not what happened with Reading. Club is hemhorraging money right now and they’re getting monthly points deductions.
