This was quite unexpected. Most were expecting them to be sold out in minutes. So, was everyone who wanted to get the limited edition able to order it? Seems like Valve had a lot more limited edition stock than we thought.
The anti-scalping measures are so good that prevent people from buying it. I wasn’t able to order the limited edition one sor some reason (I think because I haven’t purchased many games in the past few months).
Got the 512GB instead
I’m starting to have FOMO over getting the 1tb non-limited version. I don’t usually give into this kind of thing but this time it’s weighing on me…
If only they would sell worldwide :)
Yup. It’s Ok with me. I didn’t value it based on quantity available, I just thought it looked cool.
Same, it looking different from launch model makes it feel more like buying a new console rather than a slight update.
My theory is that Valve is actively adjusting the shipping schedule and availability based on part and material inventories and purchases, or production and assembly capacity. The earliest they are shipping any unit is 6-10 business days, and we’ve seen the LE unit go from 1-2 weeks, to out of stock, to 2-4 weeks, and back down to 1-2 weeks.
Valve may be selling more of the Limited Edition models than expected compared with projections for the Standard 1TB model, and are diverting the production capacity for the shells to LE models then plan on assembling the next week before shipping.
Their could be several other plausible reasons too.
I guess a non limited edition + a 1TB SSD from elsewhere is more appealing?
Anti-scalping measures maybe also contributed to the availability
It’s just very expensive, I was already apprehensive about getting an OLED while I already have the LCD version. Still waiting on steam deck 2
They said they had stock and constant production. I think the initial volumes sold out because shipping changed from 3 to 5 days to 6 to 10.
Just the crates keep rolling in and out.
Why is that unexpected? It still costs a pretty decent amount, average folks have already invested a good amount in their original steamdeck. I couldn’t justify spending another $650 on a new one, when my original works just fine.
Often limited editions are bought for their resale value to collectors. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m a lot less likely to buy a second hand OLED device.
Also if people wait, there’s probably going to be a choice in colours later on.
for me it was 100% the etched glass, didnt want that with an Oled.
This is killing my impulsive shopping urge.
I don’t need it, but it’s just there.
I just returned my LE SD. I bought it because I thought it would be more like a collectors edition due to limited quantities but because it’s so widely available it’s not at all worth the extra cost, and my non-OLED is already upgraded to 2TB so I will just wait for SD2 at this point - only a couple of years away.
Got mine! It’s possible that people wanted it but couldn’t afford or find it worth an extra whatever they were already paying. I have a 512 already so I was going to get a 1TB regardless, I was willing to pay the extra for LE. Not everyone was willing or able I guess. And also there may have a large amount produced. Who knows, I just hope everyone got what they wanted in the end.
Good on Valve, this is what I was hoping for all along. Allowing everyone who wants one to get one at launch is great. It deters scalpers and is very pro happy customer. Nintendo is great about offering their LE consoles as well.
