Hey all!

Relatively new car owner here. Trying to wrap my head around towing capabilities and possible upgrades etc.

I have a 2012 Mazda 5 Sport and I m looking to purchase a small towable camper trailer ( between 16-20’ long 2,000-2500lbs ). I get the feeing this car is definitely not the gold standard for towing. The car is front wheel drive and has very low clearance. I ve read both online it can tow up to 2.5k lbs and I ve also read it cannot tow anything at all.

I know very little about cars, it just feels like its not the most powerful little van. However, I do love it and I ve put a decent amount of energy into customizing the interior so I dont want to trade it in.

Ultimately, my questions are:

Is this a stupid car to attempt any towing with / should I even begin to try?

Are there upgrades to the vehicle I can get that’d make towing feasible?

You may be able to tow a trailer, but campers are always worse to tow than the numbers indicate. They have a lot of tongue weight and frontal area. You definitely don’t want to tow a camper with a 5. Maybe a very small popup, but I really think you’d be pushing your luck.
