Got this 98 civic a few months ago from my buddy. Car started to overhead a bit, no big deal car has 225k miles on it, its probably original thermostat etc etc. Pull over get the car towed to Honda. Thermostat is toast, Coolant Fan Switch needs replaced, they quote me a head gasket. I ask for a pressure test to make sure, fails at 145psi. They also quote me for Timing Belt (which was done at 200k), Oil Pump Seals, Cam Seals, Oil Pan and Valve Cover Gasket…
Normally I’d say it makes sense to do all the gaskets and timing belt etc etc. But timing belt was done fairly recent, the car doesn’t leak a drop of coolant or oil (sans the thermostat being stuck close and coolant leaking out the overflow), and given that I got this car as a favor for a couple hundred bucks…I’d prefer not to spend another almost $3500 on it if i can manage it?
Is it possible to get away with just a head gasket, thermostat and coolant fan switch?
Would it be a significant difference at a local shop? I don’t have time to cross reference until the weekend…but I’m curious if it’s even worth it?
I don’t have any time to even attempt a DIY as I currently have no days off, otherwise I might consider that route :/
Cheaper at local shop. Dealer is saying “oh well we’re here sooooo may as well just pulls part shotgun from asshole CHANGE IT ALL.” Some of it is preventive some of it is dealer crap. Go to local shop and ask their opinion on what actually needs replacing.
