I’ve never had a Steam Deck before (I did not purchase the original when it released), I’ve now purchased my first one (512GB OLED) and I can’t wait for it to arrive.

Unlike the majority of people here I have no experience using the Deck or Linux etc therefore I wanted to ask all the veterans here how I can get the best out of it when I get it and start using it.

What are some of the best software, plugins, addons, mods, accessories, docks, cases, screen protectors etc I should get to elevate the experience further?

I’m not asking to find ways to somehow play AAA games maxed at 90 FPS or anything unrealistic. I am just asking for all the ways to improve the quality of life features whilst using the device?

I intend to use it handheld, stream to it via Moonlight from my main PC and also output it to my TV and play on my TV.

Thanks.

Just play some games. All the bollocks people mess about with makes almost no difference outside a few edge cases, and we don’t even know if the OLED will benefit from them still given its better cooling and memory bandwidth.

The only Steam Deck specific thing worth suggesting is playing Aperture Desk Job first because it’s free, basically exists to check everything is working and show you what it can do.

Yeah! I played Aperture Desk Job on my desktop when it came out (knowing full well it’s meant as a Steamdeck showcase) and loved it for what it was, but I’m stoked to play it again when I get my first deck soon!
