I took my car to the dealership because my oil had just gushed out and the brakes were very hard to push. so my car was absolutely not drivable. I’ve had a ticking noise in my engine since i got the car FROM the dealership in December of last year that hadn’t caused any problems other than it being loud. The dealership said my Vacuum pump needs replaced because it isn’t working properly, AND that my entire engine need’s replaced as well due to the ticking nose! they’re telling me it will be $17k for the engine and installation. My dad and i think that is an outrageous price. I have a 2011 VW Touareg TDi at about 185k miles. My car is in great shape other than that- I’m getting a second opinion from a small mechanic shop soon. But am i right in thinking that price is outrageous? or is that average-

That is VERY outrageous. When you go to the other mechanic ask him what he would charge. That will give you a ballpark of the dealership’s crazy estimate.

Reman 3.0 TDI engine for the touareg is between 3-8k depending on the parts distributor and if it’s used or remanufactured and between 19-24 billable hours depending on the shop. plus additional costs for ECU programming accessory installation and consumables Dealer is always going to be your highest cost solution to problems, but there is usually a better warranty on work done and no voiding the vehicles warranty if it is still in effect, as your VW is 12 years old don’t have to worry about that I would just find a third party VW specialist in you area and you can probably get it knocked down by about a third. New Remanufactured Engine is still going to be expensive but that’s what happens when you buy a german car.
