To me they hope this buys more time before they are forced to open up iMessage. They know in the long run they will have to open up but they can delay it a few more years.

What I foresee is iMessage in blue bubble, SMS in green bubble and RCS in orange bubble when running the iOS Messages app in the future.

How will they open up iMessage? It uses a bunch of iOS specific features. If they ever did, they would have to strip it of a few of the features that only work on Apple products and it would be a separate app that you would probably need an Apple ID to use. Like how you need a Facebook account to use Facebook Messenger. At that point, it would just be like a worse version of WhatsApp. It would be pretty pointless, unless you really want to have a blue bubble with iPhone friends.

That sounds huge. So that’s why they didn’t say anything when Nothing phone said they’ll offer imessage on their phone

      That sounds huge.

What is so big about it? It’s already trivial to send messages to people with different phones, what would this add?

I really hope that this means that RCS gets more stable. I don’t know if it’s my phone (Samsung), Google’s RCS servers, or something else, but half the time when I send messages in RCS mode they never get sent, and I have to switch the conversation to SMS mode.

I only seem to have issues when I don’t have a stable internet connection.

Fucking finally. It’s ridiculous they had to be forced to finally support it.

No, they’re going to rant about it like little children until it comes out, then when it comes out they’ll complain about it not being how they wanted, just like they did with USB-C. Cue all of the “I’d get an iPhone if it had this.” crowd that then find a reason not to.

Next they’ll want the EU to mandate app icon placement.

My guess is it’s because they saw what was happening with USB C and figured eventually they’d have to do the same with RCS. Given the amount of spamming problems Google has had with RCS recently, I hope I can just turn it off in iMessage. I really don’t need yet another fucking avenue for ads in my life.

I’m not against RCS as a standard, but the standard has problems that people seem to want to gloss over because grrr Apple.

I don’t care about green bubbles or really any of the iMessage junk, I will just be happy to send a video or image to an iPhone user without it getting downsampled into trash.

    Hopefully that’s the case.

I get around it now by sharing a Google photos link to the image or video…

Pretty sure Android messages also down samples anything you send. Maybe not pictures but videos for sure. I always share videos with the Google link. It’s a lot faster that way anyway. It’s the superior method for videos.

This might not really make much of a difference in the US. Didn’t the cell carriers in the US kill the ability for RCS to work with each other? So right now RCS only works between phones on the same carrier….AT&T —->AT&T,……Verizon—->Verizon,…T-Mobile—>T-Mobile
