I’d like to run fiber from my house to our carriage house that’s about 100 feet from the house. This would be my first time doing anything with fiber can anyone point me in the direction of what I would need? I currently have unmanaged netgear switches that do not have AFP ports.
There is a down side to running copper between buildings - different earths. You are at risk of allowing a lightning strike to the carriage house being carried to the devices in your home and baking them while the ones at the carriage house will survive.
There are some suitable low cost 8Port GB switches with SFP and you could buy a pre-terminated fibre lead to run the distance.
Whatever you do, I would avoid trying to make your own fiber cable. Too many risks. Definitely buy an already made cable. Shouldn’t be hard to get one that will reach. Then you’ll need to get adapters to connect the uplink in each location. Well worth doing though.
I wouldn’t run fiber at all, I would run direct bury cat5e or cat6 cable. Especially for 100’.
