Hello!

I wanted to create this post to see if I can get an answer, as google seems to give mixed results. This winter, I was thinking of getting a small generator incase our power goes out. We live in a rural area, so I have propane for heat, but was more worried about keeping devices charged and some lights.

I was curious if we had a power outage, if I powered my modem- would I still be able to have internet access? We have Xfinity but I wasn’t sure if there is a total power outage, if the internet would go down either until the local system is brought back up or if it had batteries/self generators so the network stays up during an outage.

My Xfinity service has always lasted longer than my UPS. That’s been a couple hours.

Note that your generator will not start up instantly in an outage. Your devices will lose power until you start it or it kicks in automatically. You need a battery backup UPS, too. The generator will last longer and can be refueled.

I have a standby generator that turns on within 10 seconds of an outage being detected. It burns natural gas and can run for days at a time.

That’s cool. The UPS is just to survive those 10 seconds without a shutdown. Since you have the generator, you don’t have to put things like monitors and dumb switches on a UPS. Unless you’re a gamer. A ten-second outage is an eternity if you’re a gamer.
