Hi.
I have a 100 Mbit / second Internet connection. I currently use regular network / lan cable (RJ45) with Cat 5E which support up to 1 Gbit / second.
My understanding is, that since the cable I currently use (Cat 5e) supports up to transfer of 1 Gbit / second, I don’t need any higher standard cable since my Internet’s max speed is 100 Mbit / second.
Is my understanding correct? Or will using a higher / newer standard lan cable (e.g. Cat 7 or 8) somehow increase my internet speed?
In the same way, my WiFi router is using WiFi version 4 which supports up to 600 MBit / second. Considering my max Internet speed is 100 MBit / second, will switching to a newer router that supports Wifi 5 or 6 help in any way?
Thanks!
Keep your existing cable no need to upgrade. For new runs cat 6 is good for most people especially in a home. There is little to no difference in price of cat 5e and 6 at this point. I have seen where cat 5e is actually more.
