Hi All,
I’m looking for some advice for a friend who’s not very tech savvy. They host exchange students in their home and would like to control their network. She would like to monitor and block access to unsuitable websites and have a view on what they are searching online, limit bandwidth for online gaming, Netflix etc. I was suggesting to segregate the network and monitor or apply rules that way.
Any recommendations on a device that would achieve this that’s not to expensive and user friendly that maybe has an app included that she can monitor?
I don’t mind helping in the initial setup but would then handy over to them to control.
In the list of things you’re asking for, monitoring searches is going to be impossible (it will involve breaking SSL or attacking the network in a way that will be extremely obvious to the client), monitoring or blocking site access is trivial to bypass, but it is easy to rate limit for bandwidth. Rate limiting is probably built into their existing router, as it’s a very common feature, so they just need a router new enough from a manufacturer that has a phone app.
The other things sound overbearing and not very becoming of a host family. Monitoring web searches? Really?
