Pretty much the title. I’ve seen plenty of people using proxmox and truenas but I don’t really see many homelab users running Ubuntu server or something similar? Do many people actually use it to run docker or any containers on their machines? Just curious.
I run Debian on bare metal as my docker host.
I use Proxmox with both Debian and Ubuntu servers hosted on it. My fundamental choice for the distro in this situation is whether I can find more community use of one distro over another for the service I am hosting. At this point, I am more familiar with Debian, but I use ubuntu server for some things at work, so it is valuable for me to use it at home to build skills.
Of my 13 running VMs, nine are Ubuntu server (mostly 20.04). Three are Oracle Linux and one Rocky Linux.
I’m going to catch some heat for this, but I personally can’t stand Ubuntu. I don’t know what is it about the system or envrionment but it just rubs me the wrong way. Fine with Debian but Ubuntu just sits wrong with me
I’ve been using it for vm for school
If I’m installing Linux these days it’s always Ubuntu unless I have a good reason to use something else.
Ubuntu (minimal) to make virtual machines easily using Terraform + CloudInit
Ubuntu + Cockpit + KVM + Podman. A multi-vlan netplan config was a beast to come up with but after that it’s my preferred hypervisor.
It’s great for Apache and stuff like Unifi Controllers.
My NAS is Ubuntu Server running SnapRaid and MergerFS.
I have been using ubuntu server since it came out. Now with ubuntu moves to snap, I have been moving to debian.
I use it to host VMware Workstation. Originally started with Proxmox but I had more experience with VMware so I decided to go that route. Works for what I need. Using Packer to create my images and use Vagrant to manage the building and breakdown of my lab.
I use two ububtu servers at home. At work, I have two for non-critical things that are not public facing. For our exposed web servers, I use cloudlinux.
I don’t physically home lab (tiny apartment with a partner who doesn’t like fan noise) - but my virtual home lab (AWS) is all Ubuntu server. It’s been my flavour of choice for almost 20 years.
