Union Berlin is really struggling. Has a team that is currently playing in the Champion League, ever been relegated the same season?

I don’t think so. But we once had a club becoming champion in 1968 and then getting relegated the following season - it was the 1. FC Nürnberg.

Hell Dortmund under Klopp was in relegation places by Christmas in his last season. I’m guessing they were in CL that year.

Leverkusen 01/02: 2nd (famous Vizekusen-season with 2nd in League, Cup and UCL)

      Leverkusen 02/03: 15th

They were struggling until the last matchday. If Bielefeld would have won and Bayer would have lost, they would have been relegated.

In season 03/04 they were 3rd again.

Well 08/09 Hertha just missed the Champions League with a loss against Karlsruhe on the last match day and actually got relegated the next season.

And to add to that: Hertha missed the Champions league by finishing 4th, back then the Bundesliga only had 3 CL spots. Union also finished 4th last season.
