Community on MFN

This instance hosted by The MFN Project which runs Marbled Fennec Networks. While the public may view communities subscribed to by our members, this is mostly here as a gathering hub for members of our project to take a look into what is known as the fediverse.

The Rules:

The Lemon Bar Hangout should not be used in any way that would be considered as:

Posting or distributing any materials or data that is illegal under Canadian or US Law.
Posting or distributing copyrighted material or data without the explicit permission of the copyright holder.
Intent to create violence against an individual, group, scripted violence or support for systemic violence.
Posts or comments that are discriminatory, racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic.
Commercial advertising.
Disclosure of personal or sensitive information without the explicit permission of the relevant persons.
Harassment or bullying.
Impersonation or puppet accounts.
Vote manipulation.
Circumventing rules or moderation on federated websites.
Using our instance to generate or distribute spam content.
unwanted political discourse.

Doing any of the above will get your content removed and yourself banned from our instance. Don’t be a problem, please.

We aim to provide a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for everyone; regardless of level of experience, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other similar characteristic. Anyone found to be picking on another on any of the basis will be removed.
Conduct yourselves as kind and courteous. No one needs to be rude to get their point across. While we appreciate some forms of crude humor, do not push the limits.

July 22nd, 2023

Lemmon Bar Hangout has started to see a small amount of traffic and interaction from outside and that is pretty neat!
We have defederated from a few more instances. If you find yourself on our defederated list, you either had content that we do not want ending up in our instance or your instances failed to respond when checked to see if it was still alive.

If you think you were falsely defederated from and wish to discuss refederation, contact our abuse team via email.

July 9th, 2023

We have updated the instance blocklist with data pulled from our fellow instances. Threads.net is not on the blocklist because Facebook’s ASN is blocked at the router interface level.

We noticed a sudden influx of connections from bytedance, who is TikTok’s company. I am not sure what they were doing, but the large volume of request from another commercial company is not welcome. As a result, we have blocked their ASN at the router level.

July 3rd, 2023

Well, apparently our volunteer staff were tired when migrating our core router to its new software. The email server should be reachable to incoming mail once again…the core router was missing rules to permit such. This has been resolved.
We have made contact and actually beehaw.org responded to us fairly quickly! We did not see their email back to us due to a muckup on our end. Federation has been restored and is working once again!!!

You will have noticed that we are starting to defederate from some instances out there. As free as we want our project members to be to view and interact with what content they may; there are lines in the sand as to what content we are willing to have on our instance. If you have a question about any defederation, feel free to send us an email or support message to discuss it.

We have preemptively blocked Meta/FaceBook’s ASN(s) from our instance at the router level. This decision was made as an effort to protect our members and their content from any actions that company may take. Sure, it won’t entirely stop their traffic, but it just makes an effort.

For the time being, we are allowing moderators and admins to make application approvals on an out-of-curiosity basis a few times a week. These are very limited and we are requiring the approving moderator or admin to keep a loose eye on those approved in this manner for a short duration.

Members of this instance are not allowed to blindly create communities. This is a spam counter measure. If you wish to create and moderate a community, there will be a place to make those request in a few days!

We had a little bit of down time today. Still trying to figure how the hell to make the mail system work and that flopped like hell. For the time being, please include an email with your registrations so that if we do get that fixed, you’ll be able to do password resets.

Changed background image to something that works better with the text. Might setup a little crontab later with a script to randomly change the background resource a few times a day or whatever.

If you notice that Lemon Bar Hangout is being slow to respond, federate or is having timeouts; we have limited the bandwidth for this instance to 100Mbps as we have to make sure we don’t starve other parts of Marbled Fennec Networks. If we end up approving enough project members to make use of this instance, we may increase the bandwidth at a later date.
Lemon Bar Hangout appears to be online and working!

MFN Updates:

Jun 22nd, 2023

We are starting to see more IPv6 traffic in and out of our network which is pretty neat. Still in talks with our JNE and DRA about the whole two or three /58s per project member that works with us; not much input as of right now, but that is okay.

We are starting to brush up against the memory limits of our host server, which was expected, just not this soon. CPU and bandwidth still seem to be okay for now.

We had some bad new hit us recently. Apparently the big G sold off their domain registrar, which kind of fucks us on a few of our domains. But it doesn’t look too bad to pull away from that, looking into CF as a new reg for a while.

Some major disk issues cropped up. After much back and forth with upstream, we got the disk replaced and both are testing okay aside from high hours on them. JNE will keep an eye on the logs here and there.

Outside content:

Apparently some of the instances we federate with are getting attacked and unsavory junk is getting posted to them. Make note that the media content is not hosted on MFN, but pulled remotely. Aside from getting ahold of the other instances’ admins or hiding the community from view, we simply don’t have the tools to catch everything. If our team becomes aware of unwanted or illegal stuff showing up in the feed, those instances may be hidden or temporarily defederated from until things get fixed. Report any problem post or comments to abuse at marbledfennec dot net.

Please play nice in the sandbox and make sure you follow the rules from when you joined. Our registration is not open to the general public. You need some relation with MFN for us to consider accepting your application. Having an IPv6 tunnel with a routed /128, /64, /59 or /58 from us makes the cut to have your application optimistically reviewed, since your information as a member is already on file with the project. (There’s in indepth set of forms that have to be filled out and submitted in order to obtain network resources from us and being an problem on our instance could cost you those resources as well.)

In a slight counter to the above, moderators and admins are given the ability to approve new applicants out of curiosity a few times a week, but will be required to keep a loose eye on those they approve. ‘Curiosity approvals’ as we call them are to be very limited and have a very low chance of being approved. We ideally want only project members using this instance.
