Especially if you buy them raw and cook yourself.
It means…
B E A N S
(yes, it has no meaning other than the word beans and the picture of Heinz beans. That’s it, you got it right)
Now we’re speaking of ancient evil, aren’t we?

Linux@lemmy.ml•I tried CachyOS, but here's why Bazzite is still my go-to Linux gaming distro
1·17 days agoBecause installing Steam (which bundles proton) is soooo inconvenient…
Steam is fine, but there are obscure edge cases in which it won’t help. For example, I have one of the game launchers (running as AppImage) which, when I press Play, invokes Wine to actually run the game. On most immutable distros, this will be a problem, because it looks for Wine as a system package, it’s not in the .iso, and getting it redirected to Wine as a Flatpak is a PITA, while using rpm-ostree has issues of its own. Bazzite has Wine built in, and so this problem simply doesn’t arise.
This absolutely is an edge case most gamers won’t face, but consistency is a big deal. Also, as a sidenote, I was pleased by Bazzite having a driver for my obscure 20-year-old printer built in, otherwise it would require me to use rpm-ostree to install it, and it’s again far from optimal.
Which distros and games are you comparing
CachyOS vs Bazzite, Cyperpunk 2077, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Space Engineers. Of course, this is a little bit of apples vs bananas, but you get the point. If you want a more correctly performed test, The Linux Experiment recently compared CachyOS to regular Arch in several games:

Gamers Nexus made a good video on Linux benchmarks if you feel like learning.
I’ll look into it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I tried CachyOS, but here's why Bazzite is still my go-to Linux gaming distro
31·17 days agoYes in the sense that you can play all the same games on any “non-gaming” distro.
No in the sense of convenience, optimization, out-of-the-box features etc. Speaking of two distros presented here, CachyOS is greatly optimized and truly does increase your FPS compared to other distros (and by quite a lot, like 10-15% on average from what I’ve experienced!), while Bazzite has all the Wine/Proton stuff baked into the system, which saves a lot of trouble in some edge cases where Bottles or similar software won’t help, and ensures proper graphics driver operation, especially on older Nvidia cards, which is another annoyance on stock Fedora.
Can you do all of this manually? Technically, yes. But then why not go straight LFS if DIY approach is a priority? Gaming distros bundle all you need to play without extra bother.

7·17 days agoAs a CachyOS user who tried Bazzite, I agree. Should I not have very specific requirements that make me go for a mutable distro, I would go with the latter.
If your needs are ordinary: browsing, coding, gaming, office work - Bazzite will fill the niche perfectly.
I like the three-panel interface!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What drink tastes awful but somehow people still act like it's amazing?
1·29 days agoITT person still believing we didn’t have “a good one”.
Personally and professionally, I have gone through tasting the world’s best and finest (but also craft and rare) in beer, wines, and numerous other alcoholic drinks, for example.
They all absolutely stink and I hate them. Everyone who tried to convince me otherwise (and trust me, I’ve had a lot of “you just didn’t try THIS” moments that I had to settle once and for all by trying this horrible something) failed miserably, because you can’t pour me some piss and convince me it’s good, no matter the eloquence.
P.S. ironically the absolute hatred for these things is what sometimes landed me on this professionally. I’m a sniper detector of several wine and beer components, because they all taste horrible and make me feel bad, much before anyone else notices anything. Nowadays, I get to decline such offers, but I had to do it for the money, yes.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What drink tastes awful but somehow people still act like it's amazing?
3·29 days agoThere is. Alcohol itself has a horrible taste, and for me personally it starts to show prominently after about 4% mark.
9-12% (wines, champagne) taste horribly because of it, and anything stronger is guaranteed to make me go clean my mouth ASAP.
40%+ is just plain torture.

The only distro that simply never caused me any trouble at all.
Immutability is a double-edged sword tho
