Basically every language has situations like this. "plus” in French comes to mind. I think the worst one in English is particularly bad though – “can” and “can’t” pronounced nearly identically in my dialect.

Yep! That’s why I specified the meaning.

If they were serious about privacy-preserving age verification, they’d be looking at zero-knowledge proofs. Since ZKP is not on the table, this is really about control and surveillance.

I believe headline meant “mustn’t.”

not blaming you but now you know. affect is the verb meaning “to influence or alter,” effect is the noun meaning “the result of a cause.”

Métro, boulot, dodot?
Yeah you could apply the word to a story-in-a-story like The Princess Bride, which has a narrative about a boy hearing another story. The meta-narrative would be the story about the boy.
You don’t need to get recursive with the layers of fiction though. If you imagine a long-running many-hundreds-of-episodes tv show, the show will likely be divided into a number of distinct arcs, perhaps season-by-season. Each arc will have its own narrative, its own story beats, its own themes; but all the arcs will be tied together by a metanarrative, a narrative encompassing the other narratives.
Meta often means “one layer up,” e.g. “metaphysics” is the way of the world that our mundane world is embedded in. A reader might remark that the book Gödel Escher Bach is “pretty meta,” which might mean it breaks the 4th wall.
The opposite to meta is mesa. For instance, AI safety researchers sometimes talk about mesa-optimizers, meaning an optimizer which itself is optimised by another optimiser.
Facebook’s metaverse is apparently misnamed – seeing as it runs on computers which are in our own universe, it really ought to be called the mesaverse, and our physics are its metaphysics.
The Meta is a character in the hit internet series Red vs Blue.

“jobsworth,” British slang for someone like that.

Doubtful. There are games I was dissuaded to get just because of their massive size.

TL;DR, although one would have expected lower quality textures and other assets, they’re actually achieving this by deduplicating data which was originally duplicated to reduce loading times. They’ve found a way to deduplicate without affecting loading times. (Lossless compression might be involved too – post is vague.) They’ll make this the new default version of the game after ironing out the bugs.

Yeah one time my passport got slightly wet – just enough to make it a bit crinkly – and my gov’t forced me to process it as “damaged” and pay a fine
Poilievre killed that with misinformation.

You probably don’t need to. You can just access it via health gateway.
super metroid. (Please note there’s a run button.)

Kimulator?

The main difference is that I just don’t see young people referring to each other as boomers very often. but i could be out of touch.
Seems like a sensible policy. They do get a bit confused about traditional ML vs genAI but so does everyone else at the moment.
