  • Same, I had that exact mp3 player and it still is the easiest to load music player I’ve owned. Just plug it into any computer and it shows up like a flash drive, drag and drop in your OS file manager. No software, no bullshit. Only downside is the storage space, mine was tiny. I think I could only get like 50 or so songs on it if I remember correctly.

  • What benefit? This is the “Fuck AI” community and you are reacting to the comment section on what basically amounts to a meme as though the commentors are ignoring peer reviewed science. A company that makes billions allowing people to gamble to cartoonish levels is stirring the pot to cartoonish levels all regarding a company that regularly causes headlines that read like a cartoon villain.

There isn’t “stock” in the traditional sense, but considering all of these AI companies are running on MASSIVE amounts of debt, to the point the banks can’t loan any more without offloading the risk to outside investors, which they have been doing at an unprecedented scale. So anything that would normally help drive up a stock price would also help the banks sell off the AI companies’ debt allowing them to loan more money to the AI companies.

  • My biggest problem with all these attacks on 3d printing is that what you are talking about is completely legal as far as I am aware. There are tons of places online that sell partial receiver blanks that require the buyer to do the last few bits of machining and turn a “block of metal” into a “gun”, legally speaking. It is currently completely legal for an individual in the US to build a gun without telling anyone about it for personal use so long as the final result does not run afoul of ant NFA rules (like automatic fire, length of shotgun, caliber size, etc.). They don’t start doing anything illegal until they sell them, or even give them away (again, assuming they meet all of the NFA rules - obviously someone making themselves a gun has a high risk of running foul of the myriad of rules here, but the end result has to be evaluated to determine if they broke the law or not).

So all of these are just using gun terror as an attack vector against 3d printing in general. Just like the “think of the children” campaigns all over the world that are really just about stripping us of privacy and security. The guns aren’t the real problem and neither are the kids. A free, private, and secure populace is the problem.

I am not advocating that people build their own guns. I am not a lawyer. I advise anyone go learn your local laws and discuss with actual legal counsel before choosing to attempt anything that could be against federal firearm law. kthx

  • Most of these are complete fabrications.

    A. They all have very similar failure rates (about 1/3 will have problems within 5 years). They are expected to be in use around 5-7 years by the manufacturers.
    B. At best this comparison could be made to the extremely cheap top load washers, as they have less features and therefore less to break. They also have smaller capacity drums so they have room for larger motors and transmissions, but that only works out for you if you don’t need the capacity. If you would be filling up a front loader once a week, you are doing 3-4 loads in the small top loader per week, so even if the machine’s simplicity makes it last for three times as many loads, you are still breaking down in about the same amount of time passing. C. This is completely backwards. Capacity may look similar based on advertised cubic feet capacity, but front load will still edge out top load even in this figure. When you take it a step further and realize that you can use much more of the listed capacity in a front loader (or dig deep enough to find the capacity listed by weight instead of volume), front loaders take a big win. Basically every single full size front load washer you can buy right now will wash a king size comforter, and only about 25% of top load washers will.
    D. Maybe an argument could be made that you are more likely to be able to do the work yourself on a top loader, but if you are paying a repair guy to do the work you are likely spending very similar money to repair modern washers regardless of type.
    E. The smell has nothing to do with how much water drains out and how much doesn’t. They all will still have some water in them at the end of a cycle (not that you can see). The biggest factor in the smell is actually using too much soap and fabric softener, and not cleaning the machine basically ever. Historically, top loaders used a lot more water so these problems were not as noticeable, but as the HE mandate has significantly reduced water usage even for top loaders, people are starting to run into smell problems in poorly maintained top loaders now too. If you leave a front loader’s door cracked after a cycle so it can dry (because it has a water tight seal, this is needed for direct comparison to a top loader), and compare it to a top loader after similar use they will smell the same.

  • Coca-Cola literally contained drugs when it was invented… The name wasn’t in conflict, it was extremely descriptive. I feel like that analogy only works if we find out that Lemmy was originally created for the sole purpose of discussing Motorhead.

Like, you asked where these posts complaining about names of Lemmy (and other FOSS projects) comes from and the above is the explanation. Just because you disagree doesn’t mean all the people that do agree are a psyop or bots, lol.

  • I’d buy that any of that mattered if our time zone borders were straight vertical lines, but they aren’t. The time zone borders are wonky as hell already. Also, we have 25 time zones currently (-12h through +12h with 0h in the middle), and there are exceptions all over the place. There are places that are +13h and +14h, there are 30m and 45m changes, etc.

We don’t need the whole world to redefine an hour for us to go from 4 time zones to 6. We could have extreme east and west regions joining with their nearest oceanic time zones to give us a broader range of times and then re-align the interior regions in a way that makes as much sense as possible and probably be in a much better place.

edit: Also, I don’t really know why I am doing such a deep dive into time zones, I really don’t care that much personally. All my clocks change themselves basically, and my commute is going to be in the dark all winter anyway…
