I mean, yes, but also that’s a bit nuclear. Machine learning has real, fully good ethical and responsible uses… The problem is that society has yet to agree on the philosophy of what that is, and most business-first minded people have SUPER shitty, or even completely missing moral compasses.

This is the question of ethics vs pragmatism. I do not denounce the discussion, nor do I discourage you from considering the pitfalls of choosing. Also, right now, timing and politics affect everything, and so also must be considered.

One of the cool things about most sciences is that it can wait. Society is delicate, too, and people’s lives are REAL.

Another thing to consider is that not all currency is monetary, and that by not condemning these monsters, there are many situations where you effectively do support them and their actions, and that is what the convention is pointing out.

Goons may not be the heads or decision makers, but they are, at best, malevolent negligence, and are often the active forces executing the very will and accumulating more power and attention and importance of the heads.

Maybe, use your science for good, instead? And if you can’t figure that out… There’s no nice way to say this… but, you probably need to work on your (weak) moral compass.

And if you do decide on your way, know that you have also, then, accepted all consequences of your actions.

You’re making a lot of deeply flawed assumptions here.

Imagining bad scenarios doesn’t mean it’s the only thing one can imagine. Also, I don’t think the person specified in what way “we” are screwed; it could have been humanity in general, which would be akin to science fiction as a cautionary tale; it could have been internationally. Also, people often have mixed feelings about technology, and one person expressing a single comment of caution I think hardly defines the failure of all of whatever “western” civilization is.

Why do they look mocap and not robotic? Like if it’s a robot, the movements should be far more efficient and literally robotic looking. This just looks like “look, we can make them execute scripted macro movements with micro auto adjustments”. Which is an achievement in itself, but not exactly as advanced as this video suggests at face value. I could be wrong, but something about it feels off to me and this is just my guess as to why.

Maybe sidestep this by asking more questions.

Yes qwerty. I’m just a nerd. Lots of angry instant messaging arguments with iamsosmart boys growing up. Probably the best form of practice if you really want to get better (active instant messaging). It also helps to have a real keyboard, and not a laptop. They can get kinda spendy if you go mechanical. But, once you find an ergonomic layout that you like and the keys that you like with the features that you like, and you’ve improved a lot, it’s hard to not, in the same way it’s good to invest in good shoes and mattress.
