Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could visit any celestial body outside of Earth, which would it be?English
7·1 day agoStatistically speaking there has to be some other life out there. Although, with how rare that is and large the universe is, we’ll never find them, and they will never find us.
But with the magic of your question? I’ll go to the nearest planet with another spacefaring civilization!
I just need to remember to bring my towel.

8·2 days agoYou know what would really help? If these authors included links to the websites where readers could immediately voice their support of these petitions before the deadline is up. We have until Dec 7:
Click the message icon -> Submit a public comment
You can find the section of the document summarizing these petitions if you do a ctrl+F on the page and search for “Jayden” and then “Zakaria”.
Note - Technically the author has this link, but it’s obscured under a statement of how the Copyright Office “has repeatedly declined to recommend” changes in the past.
Some useful excerpts:
One of these petitions comes from Jayden Milne. He asks the Office to allow owners of DVDs, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs to make a single secured, local copy for personal use, when the digital copy promised on the packaging is no longer available.
[…]
A second and related petition, submitted by Zakaria Zerhouane, focuses on anime more broadly. It covers series and films that were removed from authorized U.S. streaming platforms after their licenses expired, as well as anime released on disc by U.S. distributors that no longer exist.
[…]
In addition to bypassing encryption on discs, Zerhouane also wants to legally circumvent the DRM, geo-locking, and session-based access controls that streaming platforms use. This is needed, the petition argues, as the anime licensing market is unstable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Questions about Pixelfed/rest of the FediverseEnglish
6·2 days agoSome things just don’t federate well across services. Here on the threadiverse we can all see each other’s upvotes and downvotes. However Lemmy users can’t see the likes/boosts of Mastodon users. Mbin/Kbin users can see boosts though.
On the other side, Mastodon users can’t see the upvotes/downvotes of Threadiverse users, or even their own upvotes/downvotes that they may have received from the Threadiverse.
So, while the fediverse as a whole may have 20 million users, sometimes the more common way that people engage is by simply liking/boosting/voting something. That information isn’t always supported by different services and it may look a little emptier than it actually is.
Engagement on the Threadiverse may be a bit easier, because all you need to do is find a popular community and post in it.
Engagement on the other side of the fence is usually found by following a popular hashtag, or mentioning users with a large following. They can still create posts in Threadiverse communities as well, but that’s not the typical route that they’re used to.

In 2021, the IEA adopted for the first time a new hybrid modelling approach relying on the strengths of both models. The integrated framework of the IEA’s Global Energy and Climate Model (GEC Model) is now the principal tool used to generate detailed sector-by-sector and region-by-region long-term scenarios across IEA publications, including the World Energy Outlook series and Energy Technology Perspectives series.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Considering the move to Lemmy or hosting with a custom architectureEnglish
6·4 days agoWhat exactly are your concerns with voting?
On any fediverse software, ActivityPub is going to be sharing your vote records. PieFed gives you a little more control and lets you lock down those votes to only be shared with your own instance, with “trusted” instances, or with everyone.
With Lemmy you can create an instance that forces it so that downvotes are not an option.
With PieFed you have a little more control. You can create a community that accepts downvotes from:
- Everyone
- Nobody
- Community Members
- Local Instance only
- Trusted Instances
End users across both Lemmy and PieFed ultimately decide how they view content in their feed and whether votes factor in at all.
Even if you disable downvotes on your particular instance/software, that doesn’t stop other instances from tracking upvotes/downvotes in their own way, locally. At most the main instance hosting the community won’t be federating out the downvote information from one instance to another.
The way you describe topics in your anti-echo-chamber forum sounds like it fits better with the way PieFed handles Topics and flair on posts, but it’s different enough that I can sort of see what you’re getting at.
As far as controlling how spaces/topics are organized, and looking at your chart, which instance would ultimately be in charge of that? Would it be the largest instance and smaller instances are expected to follow? What if a smaller instance organized the topics in its own way?
The way PieFed handles this is that each instance is in charge of their own Topics. Users can only view the topics that their instance provides, although they can be organized in a similar way to one another.

12·5 days agoVotes on Lemmy are basically public.
Mod logs are public, so it’s a lot easier for users to judge a moderator’s actions. This is usually handled over at !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
Mastodon (Twitter/like) users can create posts on Lemmy communities.
PieFed has more features that Redditors will be familiar with (post flair, polls, etc). It also has some useful features specific to the fediverse such as feeds for combining similar communities and the ability to view comments organized from every crosspost at once.Welcome to the threadiverse!

Star Citizen@lemmy.world•Thoughts on migrating this community to a PieFed instanceEnglish
3·5 days agoIt looks like most here are on board with the move. I’ll still give this thread a few more days for feedback. Most likely I’ll use the “Move community” option that @hal@piefed.nz pointed out in the comments below.
I went ahead and set up an initial community over at !starcitizen@piefed.zip. I also set up a simple RSS feed to pull from the latest official spectrum “comm-link” announcements.
Currently working on transitioning the Star Citizen community from a Lemmy instance to a PieFed one. Looking forward to taking advantage of all the features that PieFed has to offer!
