I’ve been seeing ads like “don’t believe the propaganda about data centers. They add important jobs, bring tax revenue, they don’t pollute as much as people say and they’re actually pretty quiet” and I’m like, oh cool, so you can just straight up fucking lie in political ads now. Real cool world we have here.

Nobody with a grad degree in microbiology or biochemistry could possibly both earn that degree legitimately and still not believe germ theory and basic preventive measures to spreading infections and diseases, like washing your hands with soap.

Ironically, my break from these truths lately has been playing MGS∆ and watching Game Grumps play MGS1 while the events of MGS2 and 4 have been playing out in real time.
I guess I just don’t understand the end goal here for them. Like yeah, total control. And then what? Do what with it? If you’re already a billionaire in a system that caters to you as though you’re a god among men, then what more could you possibly even imagine gaining? Whether we’re talking about tech CEOs or insider trading politicians or whatever, they already have it all, so why go scorched earth to shake things up and risk losing what they have for basically the same level of having everything? The ground floor agents will definitely not be reaping the benefits, but I can understand the temptation of maybe being invited up into the inner circle, so I see why they could be tricked into executing the plan. They don’t yet see that the boot they lick will stomp them too.

As somebody who pays more attention to these things than most, I still wasn’t sure which loser who debates college students he was. I thought he was the “change my mind” guy but that’s David Chowder or whatever. Stephen? Who cares. He sucks too.
Or, and maybe this is crazy, “young dumb kids” should never have a gun in their hands in the first place. Maybe this take is crazy too, but you shouldn’t be pointing guns at anybody you aren’t intending to kill. They’re not toys. They’re not a rite of passage. They’re not even tools as others (my past self included) would claim. They’re killing machines. They wound, they maim, they kill. That is their function.
If a person cannot sit through boring classes and pass written tests and practical tests, then that person should not have a gun available to them. Anybody’s misunderstanding of the second amendment is invalid here as that clearly points to being in support of a well-regulated militia, i.e. state national guard, so my argument is actually quite charitable in allowing ordinary private citizens access to guns at all.
And yes, I own a few guns myself. I took classes and trained with them. I store them responsibly. Because that’s the bare fucking minimum.
Billionaires are incompatible with any leftist system, so it’s nonsense to claim to be on the left without addressing billionaires not being billionaires as part of the to do list. We can disagree on how or on what timeline or what specifically to do with the billions, but it’s sort of core to the whole idea to not let so few own so much. People can try to claim that the state taking the billions is just making a couple of statesmen the new billionaires, but in a proper, controlled democracy, the state taking the billions means that all of the people are taking the billions, not just a few leaders. It reminds me of the argument of expanding the scotus. Just go ahead and expand it to 300 million or whatever. Boom, direct democracy. Vote by mail.
Last Week Tonight has a bad habit of having subtitles lag behind for a while, and then speed through a few sets to catch up.
My ADHD wife and I were watching The Fifth Element on Netflix the other day. It’s one of those movies that I’ve seen a hundred times growing up, so lots of parts are just etched into my brain. There were multiple times that the subtitles were straight up wrong, and it ruined the joke, so I had to correct the subtitles so my wife would “hear” the punchline properly. Absolutely delightful movie though; funny, dramatic, great pacing, good action, interesting futuristic sci-fi elements, Gary Oldman doing his chameleon thing to disappear into a character… Perfect popcorn movie.

They think that “racism” is when you’re openly lynching brown people in the town square. Or marching in klan robes. Or Nazi saluting a Nazi flag. Because they aren’t doing that, it means they’re not racist. They’re not smart enough to understand anything more subtle or indirect like generational poverty caused by a series of intentional hamstringings from enslavement to redlining and the like.
I would argue that it really hasn’t ever been that. I think maybe the closest it ever was that was in the 1990s, but I think people in the LGBTQ community old enough to remember that time firsthand might disagree. To me, it feels like a lot of backsliding has happened since then, with a few small steps forward here and there.
The only other period I can think of that could be reasonably argued was the aftermath of The New Deal, but since that was before Roe v Wade and the Civil Rights Act and the EPA, yeah it’s kinda hard to celebrate it without mentioning a few caveats. But maybe we should bring back that 90% corporate tax rate…
For anybody that doubts this, I looked it up. Some polls are more in the 55%-60% range, but there are also these:
Reuters/Ipsos (August 21–24): 65% disapprove and 33% approve.
American Research Group (August 15–19): 66% disapprove and 30% approve.
I looked into it because I suspected it was more like 35% approve, 50% disapprove, leaving 15% fucking clueless somehow.
