188k likes? I don’t Twitter. Is the echo chamber really that bad or does he just have it set to automatically give him like 150k likes on every post through the backend?

science@lemmy.world•Do cats fart? An investigation into the mysteries of feline flatulenceEnglish
3·1 day agoThankfully, I haven’t noticed excessive farting in Archie. But I still have questions. Is my cat farting more or less than a small dog, say, a Chihuahua? What do cat farts usually smell like? And at what point is some farting too much farting?

It’s also why I’m excited about the Steam Machine despite not actually owning or wanting one. It gives a consistent benchmark upon which game developers can be judged, and hopefully further encourages Linux support.
If reviewers start consistently referencing Steam Machine performance, it’ll give developers something to optimize for instead of just optimizing for the latest, fastest hardware.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that some dude in California running a 3-person company got voters to give him $4.2 billion by authoring a ballot measure, which passedEnglish
5·1 day agoThe numbering is weird, there aren’t actually 50 Propositions because you need a certain number of signatures to get something onto the ballots. Only like 10 Propositions actually make it onto the ballot each year.
Everyone is eligible to receive a mailer that contains the full wording of the proposition, a couple of pages summary with complete “for” and “against” arguments (and rebuttals), as well as a ~2 paragraph summary from a coalition of folks representing the “for” and “against” campaigns.
On top of that, outside groups like DSA provide “Voter guides” like the above, that you can independently research.
The ballot itself just has a title. You are not required to read anything to vote, but I’d wager most folks just read the official “for” and “against” blurbs and form an opinion.
ETA: You can see the official voter guides here, just scroll to the PDFs and choose your preferred language.
To be honest and blunt, the quick reference opposition arguments were quite weak, which is likely what carried this proposition over the line.

Docker helps with software compatibility, SBCs with hardware.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•[META] TIL we have no rule against flooding the community with excessive postsEnglish
261·2 days agoCommunities are not legal institutions. The rules are suggestions to keep the community organized and on subject.
Just because a rule doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean mods are powerless to react to content that breaks the social order.
Not everything needs a rule unless it’s a significant problem or common misunderstanding.

Technology@lemmy.world•I Think We Should See Other SBCsEnglish
12·2 days agoThe advantage of SBCs aren’t just the price, it’s the uniformity. Before SBCs made it on the scene, the default response when something doesn’t work was either:
“Well, it works on my 12-year-old Thinkpad”
Or
“Your system sucks, just buy better hardware”
Now there’s a consistent system to build compatibility for and benchmark against that can help the most people, allowing devs to spend time on things other than hardware, and allowing a “how-to” community to flourish, bringing new users into the fold.

politics @lemmy.world•Oil companies spent over $2 million on Meta ads in the lead-up to the midterms | That’s twice the amount spent by the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, and Greenpeace – combined.English
8·2 days agoYeah, it does imply that, which is why they compared the top 3 oil companies to the top 3 environmental groups.
Together, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron spent $2.1 million on “social issue” ads on Facebook and Instagram between late July and late October 2026. In the same period, three of the top climate and environmental groups – the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, and Greenpeace – spent just over $846,000, less than half the amount spent by oil companies.
But also, it doesnt matter because they could have focused on Shell alone who outspent all three Climate groups combined

2·2 days agoFor hand soap, I’m partial to this “hydrating hand soap” from Grove.
I dilute it at a 1:2.5 soap:water ratio in a foaming dispenser. It works well without drying me out.

2·2 days agoAs someone with dry skin, Bronner’s (and castile-based soaps generally) are too good at their job. They leave my skin devoid of oil, and therefore dry and cracking. They are, however, great for cleaning just about everything else.

14·2 days agoSolar generated 2,807 TWh of electricity worldwide in 2025, 8.8% of the total.

Its taken us decades to get to this point and solar can easily do 5x that much generation without even thinking the word battery, and close to 10x with just daily battery backup.
Surely it’ll plateau any second now…

Adding some thought to this, it would be great to be able to view scheduled posts on the “me” page with a button right next to “Posts” and “Comments” that says “Scheduled”, replacing “Account Age” and taking you right to a page like this: https://piefed.zip/scheduled_posts (replace .zip with your PieFed instance)
Additionally, when scheduling a post through the post workflow, it would be amazing to display the time of the “Next” and “Last” (non–recurring) scheduled post for those with several posts in the queue
