  • I pay my bills on time every month. That’s only one factor for your credit score. Another big part of your score is credit utilization, or the amount of credit you use vs. how much credit you have available to you. So paying off my cards the way I described is how I keep my usage percentage at a minimum. I’ve seen big increases to my score since I started paying closer attention to that factor.

My checking account pays excellent interest, but my monthly cashback from my credit cards is always more.

I’m curious why you seem so opposed to some people choosing to use their credit cards this way? Your implication by bringing up debit cards and due dates is that we’re somehow not being responsible with our money, but that’s just not the case. I’m not attacking you, just curious why it seems to bug you?

  • That was an awesome piece. We need more people willing to speak out about all the obvious bullshit like this, but more importantly we need this kind of critical thinking to reach the people who are uncritically driving the continued use of these crappy-ass tools that are burning the planet. I’m thinking about CEOs (who will only do anything if it helps their bottom line), but also about your boomer co-workers who think ChatGPT is the fucking messiah and remind you about it every chance they get.

  • Bugs the shit out of me when companies make it difficult to use their product. I do the same thing as you. I enjoy having $0 balances on my credit cards, and I use them within my means, so I pay them off straight away throughout the billing period. One of my cards (I only have two) makes it really difficult to pay off my balance more than once a month, and they delay those “extra” payments by days, sometimes weeks. I called them out on it and they said “just pay your balance once before the due date.” Fuck that. My other card lets me pay off my balance instantly, whenever I want.

  • So many mixed feelings. I hate that they have to point out that she’s James Comey’s daughter, because she’s a very accomplished prosecutor in her own right. But being his daughter was clearly part of why this happened (also because she prosecuted Trump’s best friend?). On the other hand, I don’t have a ton of respect for prosecutors in general and the way they exercise their discretion, so the partisan implications seem to be the important part of this. On the other hand, James Comey fucked us real bad, so my petty juvenile side gets a little joy out of this until I remember who did this, then I go back to being furious on her behalf. What a whirlwind.

  • I’m not sure how else this should be handled. I don’t like Newsom, and Kirk was a piece of shit who I disagree with as hard as I can disagree with anyone, but I’m frankly pretty surprised and disappointed by the responses I’m seeing here on Lemmy. This is the only social media I interact with, and I had hoped for better. I’m not trying to preach or condescend, but that’s genuinely how I feel.

I realize this is a super controversial thing to say right now but: violence is bad, even if you hate the victim. I hate this victim, and I’m still disgusted that he was killed.

  • I’m a little embarrassed to say I know someone who has worked there for a really long time, and they’re a genuinely awesome person. I don’t understand how they can still work there, and whenever we reconnect the first thing I ask is if they’re still working there. I’m not going to end our longstanding friendship over it, but it really makes me wonder.

In all likelihood it’s just a paycheck, I can’t imagine they’re a true believer, but I feel bad any time I start pressing too hard, because like I said they’re an otherwise excellent person.

  • I’m exclusively a very hot side-sleeper, so dialing in my pillow setup has taken decades.

I use three different types of pillows: a real down pillow for my head (this one was expensive, but seriously worth it), a faux down pillow for hugging (keeps its fluffy shape all night), and cotton-filled pillow for between my knees.

The fillings are what matter most to me, and the real down pillow for my head is the most recent and best addition imo. It has made a massive difference to my comfort over the memory foam one I had been using previously. I splurged for a Parachute down pillow because the high quality is immediately obvious, and it’s hands down the best pillow I’ve ever bought.

  • What the fuck? This is horrific.

So let me get this straight: the US military was accidentally caught in foreign territory by random civilians who were diving for food, and the American soldiers just immediately killed them all? And this is normal?!

A classified Pentagon review later concluded the killings were justified under the rules of engagement, the report said.

What?? What rules of engagement say “if we’re caught with our pants down, just kill everyone who saw us and we’re good?”

We really are the bad guys. This isn’t just bad, it’s evil villain level bad. I’m genuinely disgusted.

  • He got super close to asking that, and Lew’s answer was completely infuriating, as was every response he gave. But you’re right, I wish they would ask it outright.

Q: In the essay, you write a lot about the shared values of America and Israel. But today you have talked about pushing them to deliver aid, and you’ve talked about the fact that once Trump came into office and that push wasn’t there, the humanitarian situation got worse. Why was there a need to push so hard? Why do they need to be pushed to not ethnically cleanse Gaza? Why do they need to be pushed to have their military act in an honorable way? If they are our shared ally and our great friend, why aren’t they doing these things on their own?

A: The environment in October and November of 2023 was how do you sustain an enemy that just slaughtered twelve hundred of your citizens? You had to create a way for the aid to get in without it having the effect of making your enemy succeed. It is pretty unusual.
