Ha. I was a single dad of three for sometime. When I’d take my kids to the grocery store, the checkout staff would often say "Oh are you babysitting while mom relaxes at home?”

I could be wrong but I don’t see crisis call boxes doing much (everyone has a phone with them). The person in the state of wanting to end it, is probably not going to be swayed by a call box.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Can baking soda + vinegar really unclog a sink, what sorcery is this?
4·2 days agoIts the fizz, you can get minor debris moving with all the gas bubbles pushing through. I found the better was is dump baking soda down first then pour in the vinegar. Mentos and coke would probably work better lol

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Can baking soda + vinegar really unclog a sink, what sorcery is this?
7·2 days agoIt works on small clogs if you fill the drain with soda and pour the vinegar in, you can get some of the debris dislodged from the volcano action…but its not eating through a solid fatburg

6·3 days agoWhen I was a manager I had to take a few weeks off for a surgery. My team was 13 white dudes (atheist and Christian) and one brown Muslim dude. The Muslim dude was the only one that called to checkin and see if I was recovering OK. What a jerk.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: A real American Civil war will NOT be like Battlefield or COD.
1·3 days agoIt’s because USA touts that guns are needed to fight an over reaching government, except its clear that the fascist rising is going unchecked. So they are taking a jab at the fallacy of guns are needed against a government.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Quebec says police need power to randomly stop people. Can it convince Supreme Court?
3·3 days agoI watched an Irish show and the plate reader randomly chooses a car to pull over and they were required to search the car. Something left over from the civil war they were having I think. But the random being computer and not officer made sense.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•PC Gamers Abandoning Windows 11 for Linux with Higher FPS & Fewer InterruptionsEnglish
1·4 days agoWow you certainly learned a lot trouble shooting that.
I haven’t had something that annoying happen, usually it’s been install and use.
BUT putting Linux on an ancient dell box was a learning experience. I installed the system on the HDD. After shutdowns the aystem would wake back up. The solution was adding kernel quirks line to grub boot with a numeric code, which told the hardware to ignore the self wake up event from the USB bus.
Then when I wanted speed the bios didn’t support NVME boot. So I had to add a small ssd for boot partition , but have rest of system on the NVME drive. I didn’t want to reinstall and resetup so I was learning a lot about gparted and copy pasting partitions and editting fstab to cobble together a replicated set of partitions. It was a great way to understand how formatting, partitioning and mounts all worked.

3·4 days agoUsed to have this conversation with my wife because I liked whole milk in my coffee, and she wanted 2% for health, but it wouldn’t colour the coffee light enough so she’d uses twice as much milk. Thankfully now we buy Alt-Milk which is like a soy or oat or coconut mixture that resembles milk and has no " I’m 4% or I’m 2%" on the label, so now it doesn’t matter 😀

3·4 days agoDo you mean because of having to build your system first then write out the config via autoyast? To then use the config next time you install?
If that is the an issue then MicroOS is probably a better option for someone, they have a config builder to insert, so at first boot the system installs itself.

unions@lemmy.ml•500 employees strike at clothing factory. When the sewing line produces more than the planned output because of overtime or performance pressure, the overperformance becomes the new standard
3·4 days agoCompared to the factory my dad helped manage where production staff got a free lunch brought in whenever they hit production target. Not just pizza a few slices of pizza, they’d get a choice of a full ordered restaurant lunch. Sometimes they’d get a free lunch every day.

2·4 days agoJust that calendar and email are all in one. I know Thunderbird and Evolution mail have the same features too, its just MS office often came with the systems. And yeah outlook search is the absolute worst. I have literally has the email visible in the mail history and search for it won’t find it, not by title or content.

172·5 days agoYou would have to run OpenSUSE tumbleweed to get the GUI equivalent of windows configuration.
Yast has a GUI app for everything from Samba setup to Bootloader config.
The trouble is: initially there is a learning curve to SUSE that is different than something like Mint

3·5 days agoNice. But just a note nixOS and MicroOS both have config files so you can replicate an exact install. OpenSUSE has autoyast so you can define a system and port that to your next install.

Oh wow, I would like to see the persons face if you dropped that one
