I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.
Will I migrate from Lemm.ee to elsewhere? I don’t know yet. If I do, you’ll see here. If not, never stop questioning everything!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Besides money/capitalism, why are tech companies trying to push AI text generators over search engines?
3·1 year agoI’ve not used retrieval augmented generation as far as I’m aware, so my reference point is what’s been pushed to the masses so far (dunno if any of it incorporates RAG, correct me if I’m mistaken).
Looking it up I can see how it may mitigate some issues, however I still don’t have much confidence that this is a wise application since at base it’s still generative text. What I’ve tried so far has reinforced this view, as it’s not served as a good research aid.
Anything it has generated for me has typically been superficial, i.e. info I can easily find on my own, because it’s on the sites right there in the first page of search results. In other situations the source articles cited seem not to exist, as attempts to verify them turn up nothing.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Besides money/capitalism, why are tech companies trying to push AI text generators over search engines?
1·1 year agoPerhaps true, but with the nature of the errors involved (generating anything instead of error messages for lacking info) and requisite reviewing, which itself demands research (which was what it was being used to shortcut to begin with in this context), isn’t it still something of an ill fit for this?

Was there a particular edition you enjoyed, or would you say go for whichever?
It’s not all that expensive, so why not? Lots of countries have big monuments, historic buildings for their legislatures to be in and so forth, this is just that in human form.
Are we sure they’re not all that expensive, comparatively speaking to the monuments and historic buildings and the like?
you’re forced to have one for “networking”
Does it even do its job in this regard?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which jobs has the internet largely eliminated, undercut, or reduced?
2·1 year agoComments like this make asking these questions so worth it. That’s such a cool thing to know is happening somewhere!
Err, has something changed or isn’t Radio Free Asia still a somewhat questionable source?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which animals, besides cats or dogs, would you give a ride to or intentionally let in your home with barely a second thought?
5·1 year agoCruising on a boat, spot a shark fin, “Hey pal want a tow?” Or if the boat has some kinda bay, “Flop aboard for a ride sharko!”

7·1 year agoPersonally, and it might end me one day, but almost any kinda lizard I think I’d welcome in.
Also sometimes groundhogs look like they might like a brief lift to another patch of dirt to dig around in, or I dunno, maybe a brief snack run.
Where’s the, “my email address in the from field will do”, fall on this? 😂

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Given how paintball guns work, could you swap paintballs for waterballs?
6·1 year agoThanks for the heads up! I’ve not played paintball so I didn’t know what kinda paint the standard stuff was using, and was mostly thinking about a way to minimize any clean up involved.
Kinda contrary to some of the fun of the game, but everyone likes to play differently.

1·1 year agoThanks for the link, and clear paint didn’t occur to me, so that may be a good option too!

Games@sh.itjust.works•Which wired controllers, without batteries, would you recommend for PC?English
3·2 years agoSo it’s really just that the battery adds a bit of weight, and someday the thing will fail and maybe cause electrical failure of the gamepad.
Emphasis added, yeah this is among the reasons I’m asking. The other reasons I’ve noted, but this underlies a lot of it. I don’t know how long the dual-use ones’ batteries may last if I’m primarily using them wired, so instead of having that in the back of mind, I’d like to get a wired controller for when gaming on devices I’m already close to (which is mostly PC, hence asking for it specifically).

2·2 years agoThis is a good list, but y’know a niche ya missed? Pressure sensitive buttons, only really useful for those emulating old games that used them, but still a fun feature to remember.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Which wired controllers, without batteries, would you recommend for PC?English
3·2 years agoYeah in hindsight I’m kicking myself for not having gotten one like that, but I had trouble finding wired ones at the time (and didn’t think I’d get tired of the battery maintenance), which surprised me.

1·2 years agoThe cheap part of PowerA controllers is a little of why I asked, as I’ve not had an opportunity to ask anyone that’s used them.
