I’ve been thinking about this for some time. Since Arteta came in and the stakes have been raised every year, has it become too risky to let Academy players. I see us linked with so many young stars from other clubs. I always think to Hale End and wonder why none of the budding talents can’t get a chance to be in our depth. We have one of the best Academies in Europe and I feel like potential stars are being wasted in the academy or being put on strings of loans. Is that the new modern game or are our young talents not good enough?
As with most things, look at city. Once we also have an established squad where every player knows what are their roles and they can fully execute it, then we can throw in 1 or 2 players.
Right now we are still not clicking yet so the priority is to establish the automatisms and chemistry among the first team players

We currently have four youth products in the senior team, with one being arguably our best player and another getting frequent minutes. Looking around the top half of the table (and even the rest of the league), that’s an incredibly high hit rate. I’d say we currently have 3-4 additional youth products with a decent chance of breaking into the first team over the next two years in Ethan, MLS, Patino and Walters. At this level the chances for youth players are very few and far between, so there is a massive onus on them to impress both on loan and when they get occasional chances with the senior team. It’s really up to them to seize that opportunity, and I think we are well ahead of the mean across England for providing a pathway for those players to even have a chance at breaking through.
Discussion: As a Big Club, is it too risky to give ESR more than 5 minutes on the pitch?
Even during Wenger era they only get their chance in cups games, if they are good enough to play, they will play more frequently in the first team
Point is they are in the squad and they’ve all gotten chances. That’s all the club can do. From there it’s up to them to prove they belong. Look at how many promising starlets at Chelsea over the last 5 years haven’t even gotten that much (and Chelsea are actually relatively good about giving opportunities to young players, though a lot of that is down to the way they poach talent from all over Europe and especially England in the 15-18yo category).
As I think it is right what everyone says and the youth players can’t get easily in the first team, I still always think why does it work a bit more at other clubs than with us. Like a Palmer at City who looked at the start of the season that he could’ve been a decent player for City to play once in a while or off the bench. Also that Quansah guy from Liverpool who played when VvD was suspended, Im not sure but I think he did pretty decent. Thats why I wanted to see Walters for instance at the end of the Brentford game as an extra defender than Cedric
And they also all had their first shot at competitive first team football when the squad was considerably weaker
There is no. Academy standouts too even play yet
Something like this got posted the other week and I’ll ask you the same question I did then: Who from the academy isn’t getting a fair chance with the first team squad right now?
It’s one of the downfalls of success, when we were chilling in 7th, we had the time to play youngsters and let them develop. Now we don’t, even one of the more senior youngsters like ESR isn’t being given that much minutes. In previous seasons, I don’t think we buy Havertz and we see if ESR can do it. We’re at a stage though where we need to be making CL consistently and also competing for titles/trophies to keep the top tier players like Jesus/Saka/Saliba.
This is a certain degree that we need to strike while the iron is hot too. Under Wenger, it always felt like we were that one or two players short of a proper push. Under Arteta we’re mostly talking about upgrading players rather than just not having them to begin with.
I do love watching the young players come through and break into the first team, problem is our squad is pretty big. So we need to give League Cup or FA cup minutes to the likes of ESR/Vieira/Jorginho too. There’s just not much room for a promising youngster to be given a run out, when senior players are struggling for minutes.
Not if they are good enough, they will get a chance in the cup and friendlies. manager and coaches always keep and eye on the touth teams. I used to work at barnet where they had the reserves games back in the day and wenger would be the most of the time and also pat rice. Some 1st team players used to watch too. Ox and szczesny used to go a lot
It is an interesting point. If I was an extremely talented 15 year old I don’t know if I would stay at Arsenal, you need to get game time at senior level. But the education you get would be amazing, just opportunity to get in the team is so low.
Whoever is good should be played. Doesn’t matter if the player comes from Brazil league or academy. It should be by merit. No bias.
I hate when people complain about academy players not getting game time because it solely based off jeorge bird tweets or some false thinking that academy players have a right to first team minutes
The ones that are good enough got minutes and will get minutes.
