I rediscovered this video a few years ago and everytime I watch it, it makes me feel quite sad. I couldn’t quite put a finger on it but now I think it brings me extreme dysphoria because I never got to experience the girl teenage years.

Yeah… Geez the late 90s pre-9/11 had a whole different vibe. Tends to feel more positive or hopeful. I do wonder if the dark emo/goth stuff that seemed to get super popular in the mid 2000s would have happened the same without 9/11 or if that amped up the negative attitudes.

Well seeing as we’re going through another one of those eras right now after COVID, I’m going to say it probably had a pretty strong direct effect

Isn’t dressing like that part of the teenage girls experience, or am I misunderstanding?

I grew up a girl and I’m a bit younger than you (just exiting teenage years myself), and I don’t think so. In my experience, teenage girls wore crop tops and high-waisted jeans and lots of black without being emo. I wasn’t the most cognizant of fashion trends, but I do know we weren’t wearing 90s-style bright colors.

I feel like hair volume and fun styles, plus a lot of late 90s early 00s clothing is coming back in style right now! I’m having fun wearing it this time around.
