I bought the Microsoft Surface Laptop (2024), Windows 11 Copilot+ PC, 13.8" Touchscreen Display, Snapdragon X Elite (12 core), 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD Storage, Sapphire model to replace my dead 2020 Macbook Pro (Intel, 4 port) that I killed by spilling a glass of water on it.
Why the Surface?
- I’m not invested in the Apple ecosystem. I have a Windows x86 desktop and Google Pixel phone
- It was recommended by a close friend with high regard
- Good deal and build quality was comparable to the MBP
- Superficial, but the notch on the newer Macbooks with no Face ID is the silliest thing to me
The good
- Windows Hello is fast and convenient
- The sapphire color is beautiful
- Screen is great
- Battery life and performance are solid
- Performance and noise are much better than my MBP
- Keyboard and trackpad are comparable to my MBP from what I can tell
The bad
- ARM support is still limited (known before buying)
- Windows 11 sharing between x86 and ARM does not work (from what I can tell)
The annoying
- Swiping between desktops with different background is busted. Solution is to have unified background image but this was never present on macOS
- No notch / cutout on the chassis for easier opening of the screen / lid (under rated design choice on the MBP after switching)
- The highest pointer speed in Windows is too slow for my liking compared to MacOS
- Triggering the touchscreen when adjusting the hinge angle
Overall, I really like the Surface 7 laptop. I think the quality of the hardware is phenomenal and I adore the blue color. I’m glad there is a premium option from Microsoft themselves. I’ve had two MBP’s before this as my laptop but the incompatibility between my x86 machine, Android, and MacOS steered me to go down the Windows route. Hopefully, Microsoft will continue to refine the laptop line of hardware. I also hope Windows 11 improves on some of the minor annoyances over time, especially as Windows ARM matures.
