IMO concerned for patient safety under prescription plan

The president of the Irish Medical Organisation has said he has concerns for patient safety in relation to a new plan which will allow pharmacists to diagnose and write prescriptions for eight common conditions.

“The initial list of eight conditions are allergic rhinitis, cold sores, conjunctivitis, impetigo, oral thrush, shingles, cystitis and thrush.”

    The treatment for most of those are over-the-counter meds.

    Impetigo, shingles and cystitis require prescription, but the rest don’t.

      The first line can be over the counter meds, but in some cases the second line requires a prescription if the condition isn’t improving. An example is antiviral tablets for cold sores that keep coming back.

        I see what you mean. I doubt that will fall into a pharmacist remit though.

        It’s easy giving mens for first presentation of uncomplicated ailments.
