When I was in my late teens, I was obsessed with Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin’s American Recordings, so now I can’t hear “Rusty Cage” without thinking of Cash’s version
I did not know this existed. That’s incredible. Rubin must be the link that made a Johnny Cash song written by Glenn Danzig finally happen (Rubin produced the first four Danzig albums).
Rubin is absolutely one of the primary sources that helped a ton of these covers and collaborations happen. I don’t always like his production, but I can’t argue with the fact that he has been pivotal in so much of the best music in the last 50 years.
And you should absolutely listen to the entirety of American 1-4, as there is so much good stuff in there. The posthumous stuff is a little hit-and-miss, but even that has some gems
I was gonna suggest this too!
