Fuck, man… I’m rarely affected by celebrity deaths, but Dragon Ball has always been a comfort series for me, this hurts. I hope his family is doing okay.
To say this man shaped my childhood would be an understatement. I learned to like rpgs and started to learn English because of chrono trigger and I found out about anime because of dragon ball. Rest in peace, you will be missed.
watching dragon ball as a kid was basically a rite of passage for a whole generation. this man even went beyond that and gave so many good characters like future trunks etc. dragon ball is still one of my most favourite anime because of the care free way it goes. akira toriyama, you will be missed.
Huh. Kentaro Miura also passed away rather young considering the life expectancy in Japan, I wonder if it’s the stress or something doing these people in. Anyways, my condolences to the family and friends.
Miura’s was a heart problem.
Toriyama died essentially by internal brain bleeding, the same fate that took Kurosaki Maon (singer) last year. She died at 35
It was probably the weighted clothes
Making manga is crazy stressful, I’ve wondered the same thing. Can’t be good for you.
It is, but it’s probably not the reason of death for those two. They were already really popular and freed themselves from the “shackles” of regular serialization. It’s especially rough on emerging authors who can’t afford to say “no” to their editors.
I remember being so hyped to come home from school and watch the newest episode of DBZ. A legendary series from a legendary creator. Rest in peace.
I remember craving to see the next episode! It was such a a unique story and fighting concept (at least for a high schooler). He will be missed.
This suuuucks. He was so young and such a legend.
Burning out barely after your prime is seemingly inherent to a successful mangaka. Yoshihiro Togashi (YuYu Hakusho, HxH) is only 57 and is nearly physically and mentally broken from the sheer amount of time and energy he’s spent on the worlds that he’s created. Dude is only 57, but it always seems like he’s on his deathbed. Rest in peace Toriyama-san, show Other-World how it’s done
68 is young?
Japan’s standard of living and medical care available gives them a life expectancy of 84 years. Akira was also successful and rather wealthy by the standards of his country and thus had a access to an even better standard of living than most.
So yes, in the context, 68 is a rather young age to die given the resource available to them.
Life expectancy also takes into account infant mortality and young deaths - if overall life expectancy is 84, and you’re already 68, you would likely make it longer than 84 since you already didn’t die for the first 68 years.
As an example, in the US life expectancy at age 0 is 74 years, but by the time you’re 30 it’s up to 77 years. By the time you’re 60, it’s up to 80 years.
I was never into Dragon Ball but Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest were my jams. Will have to play DQXI over my vacation.
DQXI ended up in my top JRPGs of all time, I’m so sad he won’t be able to work on future DQ games. I hope someone will be able to keep his spirit in new monster designs and stuff.
I hope they got far enough into development for 12 that they can use whatever designs he came up with. Would be a good tribute, i think.
Dragon Ball was the first manga I read. I still own every volume of the original series and Z that I bought when I was a kid. It probably took me a year or two to collect and save up for each one. I read the series so many times when I was a kid and played every single game of it that I could get my hands on. The anime wasn’t on tv where I grew up so that was the only way for me to experience it. I was absolutely addicted to the series. It’s probably one of the most formative pieces of media in my life and shaped who I am today.
Introducing friends to Dragon Ball, pretending to be Goku or Vegeta with my friends and not so pretend fighting, reading it on long car journeys, buying Dragon Quest because it looked like Dragon Ball and so many more. Thank you Toriyama for all of those memories.
Gather the dragon balls.
This fucks with me emotionally. The man is my childhood. The rush of wanting to get back home as soon as possible to watch Dragonball Z on toonami. He made those hard times bearable.
Ugh… A true legend of anime/manga
He will be missed, but as he always says, Until we meet again
Acute subdural hematoma… isn’t that usually caused by head injury? Did Toriyama-sensei bump his head somehow?
In any case, rest in peace Toriyama-sensei.
Acute subdural hematoma… isn’t that usually caused by head injury?
If my medical knowledge from Star Trek IV is anything to go by, yes.
Damnit do you want an acute case on your hands? This woman has immediate post-prandial upper abdominal distention!
What did you say she’s got?
Cramps.
…fuck, and now I’m bummed. Dragon Ball was what introduced plenty people (including me) to anime; it’s like Toriyama-sensei opened a gate for us and said “see this? It’s anime. Have fun!”. I’m near my 40s and I still have DBZ T-shirts, to give you an idea of the long-term (and positive!) impact of his work.
And when it wasn’t anime, it was games. I seriously doubt that Chrono Trigger would be loved by so many people without Toriyama designing the characters. (inb4 that’s why Crono resembles Goku.)
May he rest in peace, and my condolences to the family.
This fucking sucks. It was only recently for a while, I was watching Dragon Ball clips of fights, moments and everything. Dragon Ball was never really my favorite series, it’s only a guilty pleasure that I find myself watching it and having some favorite characters and moments of the show.
I was more of a Tenchi Muyo/Berserk/Fist of the North Star kind of fan. But I had a soft spot appreciation for what Dragon Ball brought and has done for it’s community. I am also grateful that Toriyama brought Dragon Ball back so it could see new heights in the way of where it is, after Dragon Ball GT and Evolution almost killed the series.
RIP Toriyama-san.
Quick! Someone get Shenlong to bring him back!
Dude…
Impossible! The balls are inert?!
TIL Toriyama was the real Kami on the lookout 😢7
Damn. The guy who made Chrono Trigger was literally just talking about the potential of doing a remake like 2 days ago.
