Drinking a glass or more of 100% fruit juice each day was linked to a small increase in weight in children and adults, according to a new analysis of prior studies.

“One fundamental problem with juice is quantity; consuming fruit this way makes it so easy to overdose,” said coauthor and leading nutrition researcher Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

“For example, how often do we eat three oranges? Yet, a glass of OJ is about three oranges that can be consumed in a minute or two, and we can go back and have another, and that will add many calories and lead to a spike in blood glucose,” Willett said in an email.

Over time, too much sugar in the blood can lead to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other chronic conditions, experts say.

I always find it amusing that people who panic about the high quantities of fructose in drinks sweetened with HFCS will instead drink fruit juice, which is often higher in fructose (I mean look at the name.)

Yeah, it was a long struggle to get my MiL to understand Juice is like candy even if there are no additives or preservatives.

People are ignorant and often stupid. Even worse is advertising campaigns and the nutritional pseudoscience zeitgeist muddying the waters until marketing terms hide reality and natural = healthy as dejure law.

HFCS should be replaced with low sugar though, corn needs to stay on the cob and the feed should be from the field.

I often cut my juice with either seltzer or water, just because it’s so sweet. Still delicious, and not so bad

Every time me or my kids want juice this is what we do.

Tastes better too, straight up fruit juice is way too sweet.

I wish people could order a shot glass of orange juice instead of a huge glass of it.
