That somewhere would have bus lanes but then not even enforce them until now is mind boggling to me. What’s the point? They were presumably just used as free street parking zones in critical transport arteries until now
In my pokey British town we have ANPR enforced bus lanes that result in an instant fine for entering, and it not only makes using the bus (or taxi, or motorcycle, or bicycle if you’re brave enough to share with vehicles) a breeze, but it also keeps traffic low enough by encouraging public transport that on the rare occasion I do need to drive into town the traffic isn’t usually too bad.
Next do bike lanes.
How about fines for ones that enter the bus only lanes too. We have license plate cameras, if cars want to trespass they can pay for it. It says bus only, not bus and cars if thier quick about it. Maybe the markings need to be clearer around right turn lanes, but somehow i doubt that’s most of the traffic that seems to mysteriously end up there.
Fines for a first offense, but more than 1 in a year or 3 in a lifetime and it starts to look like rich can buy a pass to an empty lane: we need to start taking drivers licenses on that many mistakes.
Just use proportional fines, if the rich want to donate millions a year to local transit it may be worth the slight delay to a few buses. I highly doubt many of them would be as quick to enter if it cost them as much of thier relative income as someone making minimum wage.
A lot of rich are very good at hiding their wealth - many by the legal numbers look like the poorest we have.
