Mr. Antipas Delotavo just gave us the blessing to use his artwork for the daily random discussion threads. Became a fan of his after seeing today’s painting on Podium mall’s Art Lounge a few years ago.

Bukas na screening ng Barbenheimer, mga ka-Plema. Adbans tayo sa U.S., eh
Just picked up our tickets, going for Oppenheimer then Barbie tomorrow. Sana konti lang manonood bukas.
Kapag first or last screening, expect na konti lang manood.
Weekend pa ako free but Phil Dy stated that Barbie is one of the most thoughtful films [he has] seen all year.
Haaaayyy… 😔
On second thought, I might just go watch this. Phil Dy’s tastes/reviews usually mirror mine, lol.
But not in the same day as Oppenheimer, that’s for sure.
Have my tickets for tomorrow lunch na. Not accompanying the wife for Barbie, though. So, she’s watching on another day. 😆
Edit: Told her I will join with Barbie after seeing Phil Dy’s tweet. Wala pa nga lang araw when, but likely before the weekend. Same day isn’t possible because of work.
I’m going to watch Barbie at the first screening, and then Oppenheimer at the last screening, within a day.
Barbieheimer pa more
Just a random German here. Please don’t trivialize the Holocaust. Thank you.
Hello! If you’re referring to the posted artwork, let me offer some context. The people depicted are Filipino low-income laborers.
The art can be read as saying, “Capitalists are the new Nazi.” With what’s going on in the world, I don’t think it’s a trivial statement. It’s a warning.
Going by our depressingly low literacy rates, proliferation of fake news/disinformation, a malfunctioning quality of education, and dramatic increase of malnutrition, we can’t fully promise that. 😔
There’s also memes. Memes are arguably more likely to trivialize issues even if it was not the intent. I was surprised to learn when a friend talked about a stuff toy their kid wanted. They were not familiar with the character/s until I gathered from their description that the kid wanted countryballs merch.
But what’s alarming is that the kid seemed like they enjoyed memes around Nazi Germany and Russia as if they’re Saturday morning cartoon anti-heroes.
They are referring to the cover image used for this daily post, which closely resembles the Nazi concentration camps’ (most likely Auschwitz here) entrance

The text is also the English translation of “Arbeit macht frei”
It’s not my place to say how people should receive this, but at the same time, I don’t think “trivializing” is the right word either.
Kinda reminds me of when someone said that just because a protest (Reddit blackout) “didn’t work”, doesn’t mean it failed — and that person brought up Tiananmen and La Liga Filipina as examples. The commenters then interpreted it as the blackout being placed at the same level as those who were massacred, when that wasn’t the point being made at all.
This painting was made in 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic. Filipino laborers were being forced (or have no choice but) to come to work without the option of WFH or the luxuries others have. Some of them are also being executed for violating quarantine when purchasing essentials and not having the benefit of Grab or deliveries.
In some ways, it also ties into their other concerns like income inequality and capitalism being bad, as someone mentioned already.
It’s not making a 1:1 comparison to Auschwitz (I think that goes without saying - it’s a catastrophically reprehensible event without equal), but merely using the imagery around it as inspiration.
A lot of them were also blamed by the government for bEiNg pAsAwAy even though the alternative for them was starving to death because the duterte administration didn’t make incentivizing people to stay home a priority.
Why most German women’s voice sound like men? They gave me heebie-jeebies.

Morning to every Phlemmy out there
Do you think manny pacquiao is the most talented person in the world? he is good at boxing, billiards, chess, darts, basketball, golf, can play the piano and guitar. He is also a successful evangelical pastor, politician, and businessman. The only filipino to ever get invited to speak at Oxford Union. It seems that this man can just do anything.
You really forgot he’s a singer. :(
and his acting chops? how dare everyone forget about that 😭
And his vigilantism as Wapakman? C’mon, man!
SAMTAYMS WEN WE TATS🎶🎶

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will represent the Philippines in this year’s Jones Cup in New Taipei, and they’re bringing in Ange Kouame as their import. This, after their impressive showing in the PBA preseason, having a 6-2 card so far.
This is the first time the tournament will be held after the pandemic. The last time was in 2019, when Mighty Sports, coached by Charles Tiu and reinforced by Renaldo Balkman and other PBA ex-imports, won the men’s tourney.
It’s a good deal 😎 vacation mode na naman ang ate niyo.
Finally finished Food Wars up to the fourth season!
Hello! Salamat at naisipan niyo gamitin yung painting. To be honest, hindi ko alam na may Lemmy kaya bagong bago ako dito. 😅 Ayun lang. I just made an account to check this out lol. Kung meron man dito na taga-Iloilo o pupunta sa Iloilo sa Jul 28, may show siya next week sa ILOMOCA! 😬
idk who to tag but thank you mods!
Welcome to our humble community! Bago lang ito, barely a month old. But most of the users are from Reddit.
4 more days until weekend. Pero may class din lang on Saturday and Sunday this week. 😭
Btw, if you’re interested in joining a baguio centric discord server, message me for an invite. (not sure if linking here is allowed.)
I’m already there but since I don’t discord much, I don’t know if my ad for the Baguio lemmy instance is still there.
welcome ka-fedi (im from Mastodon so can’t say ka-lemmy :-D)
Do you guys think this country will eventually have a high capacity (let’s say that can hold 70-80k people) outdoor stadium in the near future? I became interested in this topic because of Taylor Swift and Coldplay’s world tour as they perform in outdoor stadiums and it then occurred to me that we actually don’t have a high capacity outdoor stadium here (though I guess it makes sense as Filipinos typically aren’t into outdoor sports so I guess the investment for a high capacity stadium probably isn’t worth it).
It’s a possibility, yes, but logistics would be a nightmare if not planned properly (see Philippine Arena). Another factor will be return of investment; you wouldn’t be building such large stadium if the events are too far from between.
We can and should. Kita naman with these k-pop concerts na sold out kadalasan and madami pa gusto manood, pano pa kaya when the big guns come over.
Problem is logistics. The only plausible locations for these venues are in far away patches of land like Bulacan, Clark, Laguna, etc. and getting there as a concertgoer and going back home after (if you’re from the opposite side of the country) is a pain.
